The Appeal
Study a BGT in detail, and it is hard to appreciate that Pininfarina’s hard top version was actually an afterthought by MG. Such is the rightness of its fastback style that it is arguably even better looking than the Roadster.
It is also much more usable too. A big boot and weather-resistant bodywork make these cars great for touring, as they were intended, a role helped along by robust mechanicals and superb parts supply.
Thanks to its vast roll-back roof, this car hits a sweet spot between closed and open-top B motoring. Smartly finished in dark blue, a colour that accents the chromework, it is a very tidy example with a smart tan leather and wood-trimmed interior.
It is mechanically in good order too, thanks to over £8,000 invested since 2020 across most areas of the engine, gearbox and running gear. Some of that expenditure also went into titivating the aesthetics. It is perhaps not surprising that it passed a voluntary MOT in 2022.
With less than 700 miles covered since that test, it remains in great running order and is ready to use. Factory-fitted optional overdrive makes it perfectly suited for long-distance touring this summer.
