The Appeal
Compact GTs don’t get much better than a good BGT. In standard form, these cars make great road trip and classic car event companions, and with some choice improvements, they can be made even better.
That’s exactly what we have here. This pretty Midnight Blue metallic ‘74 BGT was comprehensively restored in 2014 at a cost of £20,000. The work went beyond mere cosmetic renovation and incorporated an upgraded luxury interior and sensible improvements to the engine and suspension. The former includes quality grey leather seats, walnut veneers, air conditioning, power steering and a Pioneer touch screen infotainment system. The latter features a Stage 2 cylinder head upgrade and Spax suspension. 72 spoke 15in chrome wires help enhance the car’s purposeful stance.
These upgrades improve the drivability and comfort, particularly over long distances. The factory specification adds desirable overdrive to the mix. The car has only covered 13,000 miles since that work so remains in very good order.
The current keeper acquired the car in 2017, so has overseen the preservation of that restoration for most of its life. He tells us the car has always been garaged and only used on dry summer days. It is an indication of the current keeper’s approach that he has maintained the car well, including we are told always rectified MOT advisories quickly. A further sign of his approach is a voluntary MOT valid to May 2026 with no advisories.
The vendor says:
“This MGB is a great drive, performance and comfort enhanced by Power Steering & Overdrive. Due to increasing health issues, I must hand on this classic and will miss the throaty sound of the exhaust when accelerating & its road-handling on Cheshire's country lanes …”
