The Appeal
The 02 series were pure gold for BMW the moment they hit the market. They looked superb, sure - lovely, restrained three-box styling and distinctive cues that would mark the next thirty years of the company's styling - but the car's torquey performance was the real driver. They were a hoot to drive, laden with executive-level comfort and offering build quality that seemed to be a German exclusive in the era.
Originally a range occupied by the small but perky 1.6-litre M10 engine, Helmut Werner Bönsch, BMW's director of product planning, and Alex von Falkenhausen, designer of said engine, both fitted a 2-litre to their personal 02 series. When they realised they'd made the same independent decision, they decided to propose it. The already impressive sales lept skyward in response.
This particular 1975 car may well be amongst the best examples in the world. Offering a quintessentially 70s livery and a remarkably low odometer reading - which we're informed is verified by the car's paperwork - this remarkable example has also been sympathetically upgraded to keep it comfortable and capable on the modern network.
