The Appeal
As 205 GTI buyers quickly discovered, driving had never been this much fun. Light, nimble and just quick enough, the diminutive Pug was the enthusiastic hyper-puppy to the grown up Golf. Put simply, it was fun on four wheels.
Customers quickly wanted more. The firm pushed the 130bhp 1.9 into production but enthusiasts knew this incredible car was capable of much more. Many have been fitted with the Mi16 engine and others have been turbocharged. It is a mark of the car's capability that the chassis can easily cope with this extra power.
This is just such a car, a 1989 1.6GTI that has been modified with a 2litre turbocharged engine. Its party trick is to look entirely standard, enabling this pocket rocket to despatch surprises whenever the driver feels in the mood. A thick history file and long MOT confirm the condition shown in the photographs.
