The Appeal 

Alfa Romeo had been masters of the convertible sports cars for many a year before the Giulia Spider 1600 and Giulia Spider Veloce were launched in 1962. The Spider range then progressed through a total of four generations before production ceased in 1993. The Series 4 car, as featured here, arrived in 1990 and was noted for being considerably purer and better looking than the heavily bespoilered S3 car. 
This example has undergone a thorough restoration between 2018 and 2020 addressing all facets of the car, be they mechanical or aesthetic. Today this Spider represents a rare and eye-catching car on UK roads and ready to use, enjoy, and be seen in this summer. 

The History and Paperwork 

  • The car was first registered in the UK in April 1992 
  • All Series 4 Spiders left the factory in left hand drive and home market specification 
  • This would have included a speedometer and odometer reading kilometres 
  • In the UK a small number of approved converters were appointed 
  • These were usually Alfa Romeo dealers, and this car was likely converted by Bell & Colvill 
  • The car was used and enjoyed by a mere 3 previous owners 
  • The current owner acquired the car in 2007 to become the fourth 
  • The current owner and previous owner account for around 23 years of ownership 
  • At the point of restoration, the speedometer had stopped working so was replaced 
  • It is believed that the current odometer reading is not correct as a result 
  • The last recorded kms reading was around 151, 000 in 2014 (around 93,000 miles) 
  • The paperwork archive includes the current V5 in the name of the owner 
  • The Spider holds a current MOT valid until September 2024 
  • The bulk of the remaining paperwork consists of restoration invoices 
  • These total over £14,000 and are clearly itemised in terms of work done 
  • All work was carried out by Alfa specialists Valoroso in Kent 

The Condition 

  • This Spider’s external presentation is commensurate with its recent restoration 
  • Part of this included a £1,300 media blasting of the body 
  • This was followed by a £3,300 respray in gleaming Alfa Rosso 130 
  • As a result, the overall impression is a very positive one 
  • On close examination a few chips and blemishes can be found, of course 
  • The Spider is equipped with a tight-fitting black fabric hood 
  • This appears to be in fine condition with a clear and uncracked rear screen 
  • A fitted Alfa Romeo hard top is also included and pictured for your review 
  • This features well fitted light hued headlining and appears in great condition 
  • The Alfa exhibits tight and symmetrical panel gaps throughout 
  • The Spider sits on a set of charming GTA style “pepperpot” alloy wheels 
  • These are finished in contrasting silver and look to be in a fine condition 
  • These are 15-inch items with Alfa Romeo centres 
  • A matching set of quality Michelin tyres are fitted all date stamped 2013 
  • These are in the correct 195/60 configuration 
  • The S4 cars feature a flowing, organic shape with sublime full width rear lights 
  • The S4 Spiders feature a charmingly quirky cabin 
  • This is finished in black throughout and appears to be in excellent condition 
  • This is thanks to over £1,000 being spent on the interior during the restoration 
  • The black leather seats are deeply bolstered for a cosseting experience 
  • These are accompanied by black carpets, door, and side panels 
  • A useful additional storage shelf sits behind the seats 
  • The Series 4, instrument “monopod” is present with its full set of six Jaeger Italia gauges 
  • These are accompanied by a bank of warning lights 
  • These sit behind the distinctive, three spoke leather and alloy, dished steering wheel 
  • The centre console is home to a slew of push buttons and heater controls 
  • A Blaupunkt Verona radio cassette head unit is noted here too 
  • The distinctively angled gear lever also protrudes from here 
  • The surprisingly large boot is also trimmed in a mid-brown fitted carpet 
  • This features an Alfa Romeo logo embossed into it 
  • It conceals the full-sized spare wheel and tools under the floor panel 

The Mechanics

 

  • The arrival of the S4 cars left the mechanical configuration of the 2L Spider unchanged 
  • This means a 2L Twin-cam four-cylinder engine is fitted 
  • This was originally rated at around 125bhp and 121Ib-ft of torque 
  • This is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox feeding power to the rear wheels 
  • As part of the restoration all mechanical systems were checked and recommissioned 
  • The accompanying invoices break down all this work for your review 
  • At the end of the restoration a full snagging process was undertaken 
  • This culminated in an MOT test which was clear bar a minor, advisory oil leak 
  • The engine was cleaned, and the crackle finish areas were repainted 
  • As a result, the under-bonnet presentation can be considered excellent 
  • The original data plate is present and correct and there is lots of charming detail here 
  • The underside of the car is equally well sorted and presented 
  • Bilstein shock absorbers are noted as fitted all round 
  • We are lucky enough to have a full array of photographs of the car’s underside
