THE APPEAL
Introduced in 2001, the Jaguar ‘X400’ was the company’s most important new car in a generation. Built to compete in the burgeoning compact executive market, the new ‘X-Type’ would go head-to-head with the likes of the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, but with an added dose of ‘Jaguarness’ throw into the mix.
It was a terrific car to drive, with a choice of 2.5 and 3.0-litre petrol engines at launch and permanent four-wheel-drive giving it incredible handling and performance.
This example – a launch flagship 3.0 SE - is from very early on in the car’s life, pre-ordered when the X-Type was announced by a respected High Court judge via the Jaguar main dealership in Sevenoaks, Kent. Based on the chassis number provided, Y303 AKM appears to be one of the very first X-Types manufactured on the new production line at Halewood, which would make it one of the very earliest to be delivered to an external customer.
The first owner kept the car until he passed away and it remained with a second owner at the same address for many years thereafter.
With a mere 38k on the clock and 16 stamps in the service book through to 34k miles, the X-Type has clearly been cherished and well looked-after, and it has to be one of the smartest, most genuine and lowest mileage early cars left.

SUMMARY
Early X-Types are becoming very rare cars these days, especially those on the earliest ‘Y’ registrations, which were only on sale for eight weeks from launch before the new ‘51’-style plates debuted in 2001.
That immediately marks this X-Type out as a very early car indeed and one that’s bound to prick up the ears of Jaguar collectors. It’s presented in lovely overall condition – unrestored and original, with its original paint and an interesting provenance.
Early X-Types are at the point now where the best examples are starting to attract attention – and this one is most certainly among those. One to preserve and cherish, as soon there’ll be barely any X-Types left, and merely a handful in this condition.
