The Appeal
The R129 was the first in a generation of new Mercs - and ironically the last in a line of old ones, too. Designed in 1984, it was a modernisation of the formula that made the R107 such a smashing success, packed with innovation and carrying the classic Merc over-engineering at its core.
The dated rear suspension was swapped out for a top-of-the-line multi-link, and the base spec was incredibly high, with electric features, a hydraulic roof and a hidden, automatically extending roll-over bar. Quite the seductive prospect in 1988, and it still felt bang up to date by the millennium. Nowadays, it's a modern classic with the best of them - and sailing proudly into evocative retro territory.
This fine example comes to us with an enviably low mileage of 42,195 miles, and is accompanied by an extensive paperwork file.
