The Appeal
It’s a testament to the merits of the R230 SL-Class that Mercedes-Benz kept it on sale for a full decade after its introduction in 2001. With sleek looks, a futuristic specification and a Sequentronic six-speed transmission, the first-generation SL-Class looked particularly good in a dark colour with the optional retractable hardtop.
This 2005 example has had just four owners throughout its life. Barring a few minor chips, the black paintwork appears to be in very good order, as are the light clusters and chromework. The five-spoke AMG alloy wheels have surface scratches and would benefit from refurbishment in future, while those stout Falken tyres retain healthy levels of grip ahead of drilled front discs with Mercedes-branded pads.
Internally, the boot fabrics show few signs of wear, while the pale grey interior also appears to have largely shrugged off the 50,000 miles this car has covered, barring some light discolouration in places. The owner reports no damage to either the leather seats or other interior parts, though the gearlever is worn. The SL was always generously provisioned with storage, with multiple cubbies beside and behind the seats complementing centre console oddments space and a large glovebox.
Mechanically, the gearbox electronics have been upgraded, but the power steering/ABC pump mountings are currently broken. As a result, the car is not driveable, though the current owner describes all other mechanicals as being in good order.
