Description
A wonderful example of a 49 Land Rover that has a real story. The vehicle was shipped as a completed vehicle to Australia at the end of 1949 and sold to Snowy Hydro in April 1950 by Grenville Motors in Sydney. The vehicle had what can only be described as an eventful life and the Australian mechanics must be applauded for their ability to keep the vehicle going with an obvious lack of tools. After re patriation in 2020 I bought it and set about restoring it to its former glory with no expense spared and no pretence about the life it had endured. It would have been easier and cheaper to start from a new chassis but I felt it more important to retain the original as I did with any other parts that were salvageable, the chassis spent about two months in surgery but is now as strong as ever. Many parts were not salvageable and so were replaced with new old stock or restored replacement. The engine was restored to perfect condition by Cox & Turner, the gearbox by R Whitehouse & Son.
I have an extensive photo diary of all the work carried out which can be made available to any serious buyer. The vehicle is a fine example of the stamp that Land Rover put on Britain's automotive industry and is a joy just to study. Sadly I am not able to drive the vehicle and it is a shame I am not able to show it and tell it's story which I am sure many would enjoy. The vehicle has never been driven on the road since its restoration and is garaged permanently. I did install a set of indicators in preparation for driving on the road but these are mounted as to not effect the vehicle if removed. I have also fitted a winch that I came across which can also be removed without effecting the vehicle.
