Description
One of very few standard, low mileage, low owners, unmodified examples left! This one started out life on the Channel Islands and was lovingly owned by the same family from new until import by a specialist dealer Jack Wilson Vehicle Solutions.
A police traffic officer then procured the car so as the tick a long standing box of owning a lovely example of the 25th Anniversary model.
Family owned/ driven since and lovingly cared for and much coveted. It has been regularly valeted, had recent Uniroyal Rainsport 5 tyres fitted to professionally refurbished BBS RC336 alloys. The brake calipers present well in red and the brake work as they should. Clutch bite is lovely, no slipping, gear change free from notches/ crunching and all switches etc work. Recently the liquid crystal display is proving a tad temperamental. It might be lovely and clear then not so. I’m unsure how to go about fixing this but if it’s not clear upon collection I’d be willing to discuss a contribution towards having this remedied.
The history booklet is present along with a letter of authenticity from VW UK. The full owners book pack is present, as is a replacement centre console and brand new gearknob. I’m almost certain I have the spare key but it may take a little finding so let’s say there is one.
There is an aftermarket stereo system with a box in the boot, which the grandkids find amusing, the traffic officer said he felt this was in keeping with the car of his youth. I have since purchased a standard head unit but haven’t got around to having that installed.
Condition is very good for a car of this age. There are some pitting marks on the alloys as the chrome succumbed to corrosion. There are a few minor marks or imperfections but you do need to look very closely and the worst area is the driver wing which has sadly started to show signs of corrosion. It’s not awful and may repair for a short term fix or replacement wings are available on eBay at relatively low cost.
It starts first time (new battery in 2022), runs beautifully and has never faltered. The timing belt was replaced with evidence in the service book and a stamp in the engine bay. The spark plugs were replaced in 2021 and it will be serviced and MOT’d in the next week.
Having observed a few similar examples selling for upwards for £14000 I do feel I’ve priced this car keenly.
The lack of secure storage over winter forces my hand to sell and I know my grandson’s will be upset when it goes.
Everything seems to work as it should including the digital climate control which produces nice cold air.
A ‘useable classic’ in lovely condition with room for minor improvements. I do see nice low mileage examples soaring in value and this being the 1. 8 Turbo 180bhp model is far more pleasant to own than the 1. 9 TDI 150bhp model. I’ve driven both and would choose the petrol GTI every time.
I’m an older gentleman and I cannot afford to waste time so hopefully my description and my grandsons comprehensive photographs answer many of your questions.
However should you have any questions or queries I welcome email engagement. I will endeavour to respond promptly but please do bear with me.

- details above example stood out as a lovely example offering low mileage, standard engine etc and being silver it has the lovely clean lines.
I was told by the previous owner that it might be the only 03 registered vehicle which might well be because it was previously registered on guernsey. Regardless it makes it rather unique as the others are all 02 or 52reg.
The Mk4 Golf is a well built, practical hatchback powered by a proven and robust power plant. Many seem to have ruined what is a lovely car to drive. I can often see 35mpg with combined driving around 30mpg.
To find a low mileage example can prove hard work and having seen two recent examples fetching around £14-£15, 000 and the stunning, as new, example fetching somewhere north of £60, 000! This might give testament to this car being a solid long term investment. Had I dry storage, youth on my side and the inclination to get out and drive it more often, then I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to keep it and later bequeath this to my grandsons to enjoy.
Before I change my mind I’ll continue with this advert and commit to this sale, please rest assured this is a good car, sold in good faith with no known mechanical faults and only a few aesthetics to improve to your own standards.
This is a private sale so I cannot help you with part exchange and unfortunately unless you have the funds to purchase I’d rather not hear from you. Sorry to be blunt but at my age I simply don’t have the time.
If you are a genuine buyer with cash to hand or funds to transfer then please do get in touch. I may ask my grandson to assist should I not be available/ in my absence.
