Finding an original, low-mileage car from the early 90s is becoming increasingly difficult, as cars such as this lovely Austin Metro Clubman were not necessarily cherished when new. With just over 17, 500 miles on the odometer, this very tidy example is believed to be the lowest mileage example currently offered for sale and is a testament to its former keepers. It has benefited from being in the care of the Jaguar Land Rover Heritage Collection between 2012 and 2019.
Now for sale at Retro Sect in Tewkesbury, this Rover Metro Clubman has a very tidy grey interior, and only minor age-related marks on its exterior, with no lacquer peel or notable bubbling and no sign of old welding or body repairs. Underneath the car is tidy, apart from some minor surface rust. The history file does not have complete records of work carried out by former keepers, but my research suggests it was dry stored for quite a while before being MOT’d and put on the road in 2010. After leaving the JLR Heritage Collection in 2019, further recommissioning work was done before getting it back on the road in 2021 with 10, 543 miles on the clock. The following year, the owner put over 5, 000 miles on the car, a testament to its overall condition. In 2022 another 1, 800 miles was added to the clock bringing it towards the current total of 17, 545 miles driven.
Having driven the car around 50 miles myself, I can confirm it runs and drives very well, the automatic gearbox change was surprisingly responsive and there were no unnerving creaks or rattles to report.
The Metro has a current MOT valid until 2nd June 2024. It comes with its original Owner’s Handbook, MOT history and invoices for some historic work. It also comes with a full set of the original Metro hubcaps should the future owner wish to remove the pepper pot Mini alloy wheels.
