Presented here for sale in its original shade of blue, along with its matching numbers status and original interior is my 1970 Jaguar E-type SII 2+2.
This car was purchased by myself and my father in 2017 as a project that we wanted to slowly restore and have fun along the way in. This car, chassis number #1R 36000 BW (engine #7R 40345-9) left the factory on the 14th of July 1970 and was delivered to Harrison Gloucester Ltd.
Unfortunately, little is known about the first 10 years of this Jaguar’s life, however there is fantastic maintenance history dating back to 1980 and onwards.
This car is believed to be an incredibly original example that has lived a well-maintained life. When my father and I bought the car in 2017 it had been stood for a number of years in a small collection of Jaguars.
The car arrived to us as a “non-runner” and was quickly made a runner after fresh fuel, oils, a lot of swearing, filters and various other parts and consumables. We used the car gently for a few months until winter arrived where it was put away into a dry, dehumidified and heated barn (which by the way is where it has lived from 2017-present).
In June 2018 the car was sent to Specialist Cars (South West) Ltd in Exeter, Devon for a major check over and for a list of jobs to bring the car back up to a great mechanical standard. This ended up being a more or less a basic recommissioning costing just over £10, 000. The whole car was gone through to make safe and useable. The work completed was mostly mechanical and electrical with an invoice as long as your arm to follow (Please ask for more details)
After the work in 2018 was completed we set about using the car. We never ventured too far from the west country in the Jag as we both have other classics but it was used on most free days in the summer, tours over Dartmoor and general Sunday driving. The car was regularly maintained by the same specialist in Exeter.
2020 (during lockdown) we used the car to do our local shopping trips as the weather was so fantastic. One evening we noticed a coolant leak that was never ending so decided to put the car to rest until the specialist was back open. Once back open we immediately sent the car over for an inspection where a crack was found in the cylinder block. We made the decision to have the engine repaired/ rebuilt as it was the original one.
Whilst the engine was being rebuilt we decided it was time to tackle the corrosion on the underside of the car. New floors along with other parts of the underneath were properly cut out and replaced, and then underseal was applied to protect the work for future use. The gearbox also was stripped, cleaned and had new seals fitted as it was leaking. The engine was finished and put back in. Parts and labour included this came to just over £13, 500.
Little has been done to the body and paintwork of the car as it is believed to be very original and untouched (just how we like it). The same goes for interior apart from the headlining which we had retrimmed. Apart from that the interior is beautifully original but still practical requiring no work to be done.
Whilst is was never the plan to sell this car, the loss of my dear father is now why I am looking to find her a new home, that will hopefully love it as much as I do.
