The XR2 was fitted with the same 1596cc CVH engine as fitted to the Mk3 Escort XR3. Earlier models were fitted with a variant that produced slightly more power (96BHP) due to its square top Webber 32/ 34 DFT Carb. Early engines also had an additional take off pipe from the water pump as well an external ignition module (a basic ecu) attached to the bulkhead. In 1986 The engine was replaced with a 'lean burn' variety more suited to running on unleaded fuel. the earlier carb was replaced with a round topped version, a Webber TLDM which helped to drop the stated power figure to 90BHP. The later engines did away with the external ecu and instead incorporated it on top of the lucas distributor. The Xr2 was fitted with independent front suspension made up of MacPherson struts, telescopic dampers and coil springs, the rear was a 5 point link design comprising of trailing arms, coil springs and a beam axle with panhard rod and telescopic dampers. The XR2 was also fitted with a 14mm 'uprated sports suspension' rear anti-roll bar.
