Description

In 1934 the Jensen brothers started building bodies for a range of manufacturers including Morris, Singer, Standard and Wolseley. In 1949 they began a contract for 4000 sports bodies for Austin, on a postwar chassis having independent front suspension, a four speed gearbox and an overhead valve engine, a very up to date specification at the time, well ahead of other manufacturers such as Morris and Ford. Austin supplied the chassis to Jensen who fitted the bodies before returning them to Austin.
The chassis was the Austin Devon chassis with some modification to the floor pan. The car became known as the Austin A40 Sports. Performance because of the light weight aluminium body and the fitting of twin SU carburettors was much improved on the Devon, which itself was a very well received car.
The full history of this A40. Sports is known from new. In March 2010 the 3rd owner Mr Munsen sold it to Mr Goodyear with a new MOT and showing a mileage of 60448. Between 2010 and 2019 Mr Goodyear began a running restoration spending over £40000 to produce, what is still, 5 years later, a superb car.
It is only for sale because of health problems which are now making the basic servicing on this beautiful car difficult. As well as the work that would normally be part of a total restoration I. e. body, engine, gearbox, suspension etc the following upgrades were carried out :
The front suspension was fitted with poly bushes and roller trunnion top bearings.
The oil filter was changed to a renewable cartridge arrangement.
A stainless steel exhaust was fitted.
The ignition polarity was changed so that an alternator could be fitted.
Electronic ignition was installed.
New fuel lines were fitted from a new stainless steel tank with an electronic fuel pump.
A lower ratio Austin Healey back axle was fitted, 15 inch wire wheels and the Speedo recalibrated.
A brake servo was fitted to the completely overhauled braking system.
New rear springs were fitted with uprated shock absorbers front and back.
Seat belts were fitted front and back.
Halogen headlights were installed along with flashing indicators.
These modifications make this an excellent 4 seater tourer.
