LOTUS EXCEL SE
1986
49, 000 MILES
£ 10, 850
Excellent original example of the most powerful of the Lotus Excel models fitted with the 912 HC engine producing 180 HP. Identified by red cam covers, 1986 was the first year for the SE specification. Top speed was advertised by Lotus as 135 mph with a 0 – 60 time of 6. 8 seconds. Economy was very also good for the mid 1980s and especially for a car capable of that level of performance with a constant mpg figure quoted as 42. 5 at 56 mph.
The Excel model benefited from the Lotus collaboration with Toyota, and the hot dip galvanised chassis was fitted with Toyota supplied outboard disc brakes all round and power steering. The transmission was also sourced from Toyota with a Supra W58 gearbox and rear differential. Possibly however, the biggest improvement the Excel enjoyed over the Eclat model it replaced was the addition of an upper link to the rear suspension. This greatly improved refinement, simplified servicing the rear brakes and also cured the reliability problems of the rear drive shaft UJs.
