Description

1973 Citroen SM 2. 7 EFI (injection electronique). Low mileage (87k), 3 owners (last owner since 1996) and comes with an extremely comprehensive service and maintenance record going back to when the car was almost new. Much of the work has been carried out by the renowned Andrew Brodie, including an engine rebuild with solid valves and chains less than 10, 000 miles ago. There are invoices for approximately £56, 000, demonstrating that this has been a diligently maintained car over many years.

Originally supplied new in the UK in blue d'orient (AC616) and restored approximately 15 years ago in bleu platine with complementary navy alcantara interior trim. It has fully functioning air-conditioning, renovated by the previous owner.

I bought the car from long-term owner 2 years ago and set about getting it back on the road after a period of being stationary during the pandemic. This involved approximately £10k of work by Maserati expert in Kent, including a full service. The SM is an incredible motorway cruiser and a piece of automotive art. The notoriously fabled Maserati V6 engine has a reputation of being problematic, mainly due to the original specification of sodium filled valves. This car actually ran for nearly 80, 000 miles on the original valves (!) but has now had the appropriate engine modifications for longevity and reliability. It sounds wonderful, which is testament to Andrew Brodie's workmanship. It is increasingly difficult to find someone to rebuild this engine, and the cost of doing so is enormous, so this is a major advantage of this particular car. Other sensible modifications, such as the positioning of new ignition coils and a new lumenition ignition system make it reliable and usable. Other special details include a one piece rear bumper, and the supply of non-UK specification wing mirrors (as Robert Opron designed), which are themselves worth >£600 each. The steering rack has an LHM leak that improves with use and I have been monitoring. The rack can be renovated by Pleiades in Cambridgeshire for around £600 I believe.

I have priced it sensibly (based on Hagerty 'good' valuation) to reflect that there is some room for improvement - mainly in some areas of bodywork . Please note that these are focal areas of paint failure. There is very little rust.

I would like this car to be taken on by someone who appreciates the time, money and effort that it takes to keep this SM in such good working order - it really is a credit to the previous custodian of nearly 30 years. Although cosmetically not perfect, I don't think it would take much to get it there, and I believe the money has been spent in the right places.

I am selling due to increased work responsibility with lots of foreign travel and very little time to drive my cars. This car needs to be driven and enjoyed.

I would like to retain the number plate, but I am open to negotiation on this.

Available to view and test drive in central London. My instagram page is @londoncitroen if you wish to see it running on video.
