The BMW 501 marked a return to automotive manufacturing for BMW after the war. First shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1951 aimed at the luxury market in direct competition with Mercedes Benz.
The 501 has long curves accentuated by the flared arches, the familiar kidney grill making it undeniably a BMW and a spacious interior accessed by suicide doors. The flowing curved design earned it the nickname ‘Barockengel’ - meaning Baroque Angel.
This example was owned as part of a large private classic car collection in southern Spain. The owner had a passion for BMW’s owning dealerships in Spain and this car was subsequently maintained by BMW mechanics.
The car is finished in silver with a cream upholstery interior. The bodywork is rust free and in good condition. The interior is in very good original condition and a comfortable place to enjoy the ride. The car is powered by a V8 engine with a manual 4 speed transmission.
The car is registered as a historic vehicle in Spain which is awarded to historic vehicles with special interest culturally. This brings the added benefits of reduced insurance, road tax exemption, a five year interval between ITV tests and permitted entrance to low emission zones.
The car was used regularly up until 2011 when it then went into one of the owners' dealerships for show. Latterly it has been in secure dry storage.
The car is complete but will require recommissioning due to the length of time in storage. The price reflects the quality of the vehicle but recognizes the need to return it to service for road use.
Any prospective buyers are welcome to appraise the car in person by appointment
