Ex-MoD ‘Wolf’ Defender 90 TUL, with Remus upgrade and a couple of civilian adjustments (NATO tow bar replaced with standard, gun rack and aluminium panels for radio kit removed and rear reversing light now LED).
Purchased in 2020 direct from MoD (via Witham Specialist Vehicles).
The MoD Wolf 90s were an upgrade on the standard 90 to make them more robust. Based on the standard 90 design, with the 300 TDI engine (preferred by MoD to TD5 for ease of maintenance), but with improved and heightened suspension, different and stronger chassis design (waxoil treated from new to prevent corrosion), strengthened rear axle and 24v electrics.
This one has the side opening rear door with the spare wheel attached there and out of sight rather than on the side.
The MoD unfortunately didn’t invest in these vehicles once it had decided to sell them off. So this has had lots of work done by Land Rover specialists LRXS in Kent and Musset Restorations in Devon so that it’s now fully reliable. This work includes fully reconditioned engine by specialists, new starter motor, fuel pump, power steering box, original design PVC soft top from Exmoor Trim, front springs windscreen wiper motor and a handful of other items so it now works like a dream. As might be expected with a LR of this age and use it has a number of minor bumps and chips, but it is structurally and mechanically very sound. Although designed for off roading it has mostly been used on Devon lanes where it excels and is great to drive with a high driving position.
It could be tidied up for showing relatively easily with the NATO tow bar replaced and gun rack put back between the front seats. It would be possible to do an FOI request and obtain further information about its service record if you’re interested, but I’ve not done that.
