I bought this 1976 Land Rover 88” Series 3 Lightweight (ex-military) as a leisure/ fun vehicle around six years ago. Living in the rugged hills of rural North Wales, I wanted something characterful, capable, and connected to the landscape. Being a landscape artist, I needed a rugged, but reliable (start first time, every time) vehicle to get me in and out of rugged locations in any weather - this Landy ticked every box.
This isn’t your average Series 3. In 2019, after the original petrol engine reached the end of its life, I commissioned a respected local Land Rover specialist to fit a 200 TDi engine from a 1994 Discovery. The result is a dramatic improvement in reliability, speed, drivability, and torque—while keeping true to its heritage as a no-nonsense, go-anywhere classic. And thanks to the 4x4 gear box and fairy overdrive, she’ll go anywhere. Alongside the engine upgrade, other good looking and practical modifications include:
• 5x 235/ 85R16 120S BF Goodrich ATK02 tyres (good condition)
• Wolf-style 5x165. 1 (ET20) wheels
• New Exmoor Trim canvas hood
• Servo-assisted brakes
• Upgraded wiring loom
• Radiator fan and heater
• Seat belts and other additional necessary works

It has all the charm of a Series Landy, but with much-improved usability.
My favourite thing? The raw, honest character. It’s not pretending to be showroom-perfect, and that’s exactly the point. It’s been cleaned, but there’s no fresh paint hiding anything—what you see is what you get, there’s room for work or changes as you wish. It’s a vehicle built to be used, enjoyed, and trusted on tracks and byways.
