I bought the complete and running car in 2005 from Type 3 Detectives in the UK. This is an original right-hand-drive 1500S model. At the time I had grand plans to restore the car in my spare time. As with many projects like this, other things came up and after a reasonable start it was pushed into my parents garage and left there. I would rather the car goes to someone who can complete it and enjoy it, than it sits for another few decades in a garage. All the parts that came off the car are present.
Because it has been garaged all this time all the welding work that was done in 2005/ 2006 is still solid. The floor pans and heater channels were replaced by Beetle Link, along with some work around the bumper mounts and other areas of the lower body. The top half of the body is solid, as are the window frames.
Front to back, the bonnet has a dent at the front and some surface rust, but is otherwise solid. The two front wings are reasonable, but in need of some repair lower down. The driver’s side wing is a later item that has been modified (unknown to me until I removed it from the car). The passenger’s side door has been worked on and is now largely solid. The driver’s side door has not been touched yet and has some rust along the bottom. Both rear wings are in reasonable condition with some rust in the lower portions. The rear hatch has been worked on and is solid.
Mechanically very little has been done as the car ran and drove well before I took it off the road. The gearbox, gearbox cradle, drive shafts, etc., were all cleaned and painted. The rear drum brakes were cleaned and painted (I have some replacement shoes in case they are needed). The engine was cleaned and then kept on a bench at the back of the garage. This turns freely (see video). The car is a 1500S, so comes with dual Solex 32 PDSIT carbs, one has been rebuilt, the other is waiting to be done. The car comes with the same Empi exhaust that it had when I bought it.
The interior is red and grey two-tone on the trim panels, with red seats, and an off-white headliner. All of this is present. All of the underlay that could be removed in one piece has been to be used as templates for replacements. The glass is all present, and the car comes with pop-out rear quarter pieces. All the seals and trim for the glass and body panels is present. The dash is unfortunately cracked (as many are of this period).
