Description
After being off the road and dry stored for 12 years, the intention with this hugely rare non-sunroof Phase 1. 5 car was to, as closely as possible, restore the condition it was in when it rolled off the forecourt of Athelstan Peugeot on 1st August 1988. As such, the car has undergone a bare shell, nut and bolt restoration.
The shell, after being fully stripped of running gear/ engine/ glass/ interior has undergone a comprehensive restoration including the underside which was cleaned to bare metal, etch primed, stone chip guarded (gravitex) and sprayed. The body and engine bay have been fully resprayed in the original Cherry Red (P3KB), as has the internal floor.
In terms of new parts, practically everything has been replaced and I have parts invoices totalling c£6k from throughout 2024. These include NEW; driveshafts, wishbones, suspension, top strut mount bearings and rubbers, steering rack gaiters and arms, Bilstein B4 shock absorbers (front and rear), drop links, track rod ends, complete new rear axle with bump stops and stainless steel cups, front and rear wheel hubs and bearings, front and rear discs/ pads, front and rear callipers, fuel pump and seals, fuel level sender, fuel relay, throttle position sensor, CNC bent stainless steel fuel lines, brake lines and stainless steel braided hoses, brake master cylinder, front driving/ fog lights, brand new Milltek classic stainless steel exhaust system (subtle OEM+ 2 inch tail pipe, lifetime guarantee), clutch kit and cable, gearbox linkage kit, radiator, ignition coil, alternator, engine and gearbox mounts, all new stainless steel nut and bolt sets (subframe fixing, suspension strut hubs, engine to gearbox, engine bay etc.), thermostat, full coolant hose set (rubber as original) with inner wing stainless steel coolant pipe, handbrake cables, speedo cable, cambelt and water pump kit, tailgate panel (grey PH1. 5), tailgate badges, side badges, red bumper trim inserts, bumper mounting kits (front and rear), door hinges, sound deadening/ insulation, 5 x original Speedline alloys professionally refurbished and powder coated, 5 x Toyo Proxes TR1 tires - the list goes on with smaller ancillary items and is evidenced by a consolidated PDF document of all invoices, purchased from suppliers such as Pug10ff, Baker BM, Spoox, Retro Race & Rally and some French companies. The front seats have been professionally refurbished, using donors to retain the original leather (with new bolster foams) and, for 37 years old, look and feel great!
The engine has been fully stripped, inspected, cleaned and rebuilt with all new gaskets, filters, belts, pumps, plugs, leads, clutch, bearings, piston rings etc. Cylinder head has been rebuilt; new valves, steam seals, valve seats re-cut, tappet shims, skimmed and pressure tested. The engine has been professionally set up and configured (Pro Tec Performance); timing, fuelling, injection etc, it idles, runs and pulls superbly. Subframe has also been stripped, cleaned and refurbished as has the steering rack. Finally, the car has been finished off with high quality, period correct reproduction dealer plates that obviously match where the car came from new (backed up by history documentation).
The car comes with 2 keys (each operating all barrels) and it's full original book pack including VIN/ Registration matching warranty card and service record that states date of purchase, first owner and subsequent service stamps. Having owned 205s from the same period previously, l've never seen a more comprehensive service history in terms of receipts, invoices and old MOTs - it includes the invoice for it's first 1, 000 mile run-in service at Peugeot, dated 19/ 08/ 1988. From that first dealer service invoice in 1988 there are c100 pages of subsequent receipts and MOTs spanning the late 80s, 90s and 00's until it was put into dry storage in
2012 - remarkable how such early and comprehensive history has travelled with the car throughout it's life and indicative of how well it’s been looked after. If the car had no or little history, you could argue it's relevancy given the extent of work that's gone into the restoration, as mechanically and shell wise it's practically as new, but the fact it carries such provenance is a fantastic and rare accompaniment; one that is sure to uphold its value and desirability.
The car is fully HPI clear and I have dozens of photographs from throughout the restoration process. The 205 GTI is becoming a true classic now (this earlier model will be tax and MOT exempt in 3 years!), good ones appreciating in value and this is a genuine opportunity to own arguably the most desirable and collectable specification (Phase 1. 5, non-sunroof, non PAS) in remarkable shape, with a super history and a whole new lease of life - it has wanted for nothing during the restoration and sailed through its MOT with no advisories! Feel free to message/ call with any questions.
