Description
This vehicle is a
VOLKSWAGEN TYPE 181 which was introduced
in 1969 to meet a German army (Bundeswehr) requirement for a general-purpose utility vehicle, with off-road capability but not four wheel drive.
This particular vehicle entered Bundeswer service in December 1971, was released in 1982 and had several german civilian owners before being imported into Britain in 1989. It is a fairly early model, built two years after the design was first introduced.
The 181 was based on the Karmann- Ghia bodypan, firstly with the 1500cc, then later the 1600cc engine. Other mechanical parts were taken from various models in the VW repertoire but most of the body parts are unique to the 181.
This vehicle has been modified and some of the original body parts have been removed or replaced so it looks more like the WWII
type 82 Kübelwagen.
(Kübelwagen is short for Kübelsitzwagen, meaning
EKO 392K)
"bucket seat car".)Part of a car collection
