There can't be many 1 owner cars left and so it is with a very heavy heart that I am putting my fathers 1 owner from new CGT up for sale after he sadly passed away earlier this year. I'm 55 ( I think the car is fairing better than me) and having known this car since I was born and I truly want to keep it but having been garaged it's whole life I need someone to love her and care for her as much as my dad did. This is a living piece of history. Purchased by my dad from Cavendish Motors, Chesterfield, He bought it from the sales representative Mary Hodgkinson, I still have the receipt. Well I say that but it's written on the back of her business card. Part of the Kenning Motor Group, I also have the original paperwork folder and key fob. This car was the love of my dads life, it was his extra child. And it does feel like my sibling too, all my childhood memories involve this car so it's so very important to me that she finds the right home.
My dad was a motor engineer, he lived for cars and owned a garage, petrol and MOT station in Sheffield when he bought the C. He worked with cars from leaving school, it truly was his passion. Whatever the C wanted in his ownership it got. After owning a Healey when he got married as soon as he saw the C in the press he wanted one. I still have the article he kept from 'Motor' magazine week ending October 21 1967 and he saved for three years to finally own one.
The C has always lived under cover and that is something I can't give it. So it needs to go to a home dad would approve of. Having sat for 6 months she started straight away. And she's a little unusual too. She's bronze yellow for a start, normally a B colour but wow, does it suit the shape and well Kennings Motor Group were known for ''enhancing'' C's. The C is also unusual in that it has two steering wheel stalks, wiper, horn and lights. Dad always joked Kennings had raided the parts bin but it does make for a nicer drive and more modern drive with everything at your fingertips. It comes with nice extras too, overdrive, heated rear screen, Downton Exhaust, uprated anti-roll bar, anti-tramp bar, lightened and balanced flywheel, front adjustable shock absorber and telescopic rears.
I have just about all the C's MOT certificates too, a couple of which in the late 70's early 80's have my dad's signature at his MOT centre. This is truly a loved car from day one. Is it concourse, no, but it's a stunning example (just look at that engine bay) and it's a piece of history and a story of one car and the man that loved it from day one.
It's a lovely drive too, a grin appears on my face the moment I put my foot down. We've serviced it, with new brake fluid, coolant. oil and filter, new points and HT leads and the timing and carbs have been set up too. It truly is a beautiful car that I have enjoyed finally driving at 55 after being too afraid that dad would shout at me if I stalled it. He never would have though, he taught me to drive and actually I learned how to change gear in the C. Dad would shout second, third or fourth when I was about 7, dip the clutch and I'd pop it in gear. He taught me to feel a gearbox, now that is priceless.
