Description
For regrettable sale, my dads S-Type 3. 0. He's just retired and wants a cheaper car to run.
This is one of very very few completely unrusty, un-restored cars. It does however need some work to get it to the standard you might want, hence the low price. This would be a 6-7k car at a dealer.
This was garaged all its life and lived in Norfolk, where it's had little rain or salt. It's only been in Scotland for two years, and I comprehensively cavity waxed the car on my ramp when it was bought (sill covers off), and sprayed a think coating of wax over the sills and inner wheel arches (after ensuring the car was completely dry in my dehumidified garage).
I have 7 classic cars and 2 classic bikes of my own, but now with expanding family I don't have time to look after this car for my dad or do the repairs, so it's being sold while it still has MOT.
This isn't the usual optimistically written advert. I want this car to be repaired and cherished by an enthusiast, so the condition report here is 100% accurate. To many this will make the car sound worse than it is, so I still want to be clear that this is one of the few S types that has a good chance of still being in good condition in another 20 years time.
Mechanical faults
- Handbrake actuator fault. The handbrake stuck on, so I released it by manually applying 12v to the release side of the actuator and disconnected the muliplug. Because of this the handbrakle warning lights are on the dashboard and it shows handbrake codes on the diagnostics.
- Sticking brake pedal. From what I've read this could be a sticky servo, or the brake pedal bush itself sticking. When the engine is cold the brakes stick on unless you pull the pedal back up with your left foot. Frustratingly for my dad a local garage put brakes all round including front calipers on it to try and cure the problem. Once the engine is warm the problem seems to go away so it's heat related. You can drive it fine if you use your left foot to fully release the brake for the first few miles, but it's obviously not ideal.
- A/ C not blowing cold, and it's showing codes for various HVAC circuit failures. This only started after the car had the inlet manifold off to replace the spark plugs and coils at a garage. I suspect theres a loose or undone connector plug that was missed when the work was done, but no guarantees obviously.
- Secondary alarm fault. Occasionally when locked the secondary alarm will sound. Forum consensus seems to be to unplug it as it's only an anti-towing alarm, though you could replace the internal batteries if you wish. Main alarm/ locking works fine.
Bodywork faults
- See video for a full appraisal
- 4 minor dents OSR wing NSR door NSF door (2) all repairable by PDR
- Various minor scratching due to careless washing. Very frustrating to see, but the vast majority will come out with a machine polish. The worst is around the headlights and front bumper
- Minor scratches on OSF door mirror OSR wing and NSF&R doors and rear bumper. the door ones will improve considerably with machine polish.
- I think the N/ S doors and rear bumper have had paintwork in the past to a very good standard. Most people would never know (the colour match is good), but I'm a bit of a bodywork freak, and if you are too, you'll see that the paint build up on the panel edges doesn't appear factory. The rest is original paint as far as I can tell.
- All 4 wheels need refurbished
Interior faults
- Driver seat bolster is stained. I'm sure it'll clean up well, but there are a few scuffs to the leather there too so it'll never be perfect
- OSR door speaker grill is cracked
- Headlining needs to be repaired (sagging)
Other than this it really is a cracking car.
- Wheel arches perfect and unrepaired
- Sills perfect
- No rust to speak of, and unlikely to ever have rust issues.
- Full service history
- Spark plugs and coils replaced
- 4 almost new Michelin Cross Climate 2 tyres
- Enthusiast owned since new
If you're genuinely interested get in touch. I'm happy to collect a buyer from Glasgow airport and take them to the car (just over an hour), though it's currently untaxed and uninsured, so you'd need to make sure you tax and insure it before driving home.
