Description

1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale RHD

Introduced in 1963, the Giulia SS was essentially a larger engined version of the earlier Bertone designed Giulietta SS, itself inspired by Alfa Romeo’s “Disco Volante” racers and the famous “B. A. T.” concept cars. While precise details and specifications evolved over time, all Sprint Speciales adhered to the basic concept of using lightness and aerodynamic efficiency to extract maximum performance from the power provided by the familiar four cylinder twin cam Alfa Romeo engine.

Built in January 1964 as a “normal” Giulia SS, in July of that year this car became part of a batch of a mere 25 Sprint Speciales supplied to Alfa Romeo UK, who in turn passed them to Ruddspeed to undertake official, factory sanctioned conversions to right hand drive. While no Sprint Speciale could ever be considered commonplace, this conversion makes for a truly rare and desirable machine.

Currently showing just under 63, 000 miles and with its sixth owner, the Alfa Romeo comes with an extensive history file detailing work done over the years. Of particular note is the interior work done by well known trimmer and Alfa enthusiast Anthony Coburn, who owned the car from 1979 to 2010 and also oversaw an extensive restoration by Benalfa Cars. While with a later keeper, the car was entered and enjoyed success in some extremely prestigious concours events. The Alfa came to its current custodian in 2022 and has been used very sparingly since then.

Although it now counts as a slightly older restoration and does show a few very minor imperfections, there is no doubt this Sprint Speciale still presents excellently in red over a black/ red interior, the latter still a fine testament to Mr. Coburn’s work. Mechanically it has also been well cared for and is in superb fettle.

In conclusion then, a fine example of a very desirable Alfa Romeo with extensive documented history which is worthy of serious consideration by any serious Italian car enthusiast.
