Description
1965 Mustang fastback / 2+2 Racing car. Uk registered with V5. Imported by me in 2013. Originally this is an 'A' code 4 barrel 289 4-speed model finished in black. Now a racing car with a 351 Cleveland engine. All original steel bodywork, only the bonnet is fibreglass. Glass front and rear windscreens and lexan door windows. The 351c engine has been fully rebuilt with high compression forged pistons and original boss 351 heads together with a flat tappet mechanical cam, edelbrock intake, 750 d/ p Holley and MSD ignition system incl. Msd distributor. Fenderwell headers. Full manual 3 speed c-4 transmission from Performance Automatic together with 5500 Dynamic torque converter and newly fitted Serck oil cooler. Working charging system. Fuel cell in the boot, battery shut off on the back panel. The car was originally built in the US as a 'gasser' in around 1977 with Econoline front axle. Rear axle is a 9-inch stock width '65 mustang case complete with leaf spring perches but is currently running on new Competition Engineering coil overs and ladder bars. Axle is a Currie Enterprises 9-inch casing with Moser Engineering centre section and Daytona pinion support , 31 Spline spool with 3. 89 gears, Moser half shafts. All new vented front disc brakes with vented rear discs being an original Lincoln Versailles kit. New (Halibrand copy/ Summit racing) 8x15 rear and 4x15 front wheels, rear slicks are new Hoosier 28x10-15 and front runners still have the bobbles on them. Interior has 6 point / half cage and original dashboard, stock Mustang passenger seat. Fully rewired with electric Holley fuel pump new braided lines and both electric and mechanical fans. Good paint and bodywork, rear quarters are new, stripes are vinyl. Front panel, frame rails, bulkhead and floor as far as behind the front seats are original and rust free. The floor from behind the seats to the back panel was replaced to accomodate the different axle set up. With new rear frame rails the car could easily be made into a leaf sprung strip or circuit car or street/ track. Just to explain the history, as the car arrived from the US it had an extremely wide Dana 60 axle so previous owner had radiused the rear wheel arches and flared them. It had very large wheels and oversize slicks which wasnt my cup of tea at all. I sourced a stock width axle together with Calvert racing leaf spring perches on the assumption that perhaps one day we would put it back on leaf springs. I decided to leave the existing coil over set up as was for time being and bought new Competition Engineering shocks and axle brackets to suit. Instead of 'patching' the rear arches I bought complete quarters - the replacement wasnt because of corrosion. So the axle is a great foundation for anyone wanting to go down the stock route. The car arrived with drum brakes front and rear. The Ford/ Lincoln Versailles rear disc brakes were a popular conversion so went that route. I sourced front discs and calipers from an Econoline conversion specialist in the US, the fronts are Jeep vented discs with S-10 calipers. I had custom made CNC alloy brackets made from them here in the UK (BG Developments) All new braided flexi brake lines front and rear. Car is ''turn key'' as it sits. In the US with the heavy wider axle it had run 10. 90's in the 1/ 4. The too tall slicks were all because of I believe a mixture of the look of the era and latterly using rear gears that were far too low. Personally I like a stock appearing car in body terms so went down that route.
There are pictures in the gallery of the engine rebuild and some from its various phases of racing in the US. I was told by previous owner it had been raced since 1967 with its 4-speed 289 and then switched to a Cleveland and auto in around 1973. I am still in contact with the owner I bought from so there is plenty of history if of interest. Some historic pictures are also in the gallery.
Not many '65 Mustang Fastbacks come up for sale in race trim hence why I purchased in the first place. Its been a fastback since day 1 not some chopped up coupe. I've been drag racing on and off for the last 44 years and started with a '65 fastback which I still have. I bought this car for my daughter to race but she has decided to pursue other interests, preferring horses of the living breathing variety. I have two racing cars already so regrettably one of the three must go. Car has only been seen at one quiet track for a few part throttle runs so barely been seen or used.
Do contact with any questions, no canvassers though thank you
