The Donald Healey Motor Company completed its first car in 1945. Five years later they updated their range and offered the Tickford saloon and the Abbott DHC. This 1953 car has the later F type chassis fitted with a Riley 2. 4 twin cam engine. Depending on who you read, either 78 or 77 Abbott were made. From what I can make out there are around 30 left in various states of repair.
This Healey Abbott is in really lovely condition and is ready to use now. We have had it and improved it for a couple of years including a complete carburettor overhaul, fitting a discreet set of inertia reel belts and various other bits and bobs. We bought it from a private vendor through Car and Classic. It has masses of history and by my calculation it has had more than £60, 000 spent on it in the last 10 years alone. Things attended to include full brake overhaul, lamp replacement and/ or refurbishment, repainting, leather renewal, water pump overhaul, Ash frame replacement, the list goes on. It cruises easily at 60 on normal roads and it will do 70 easily, though, achieving its supposed top speed of 101 is beyond my level of bravery. It has flashing indicators discreetly incorporated but the trafficators work too! It has a steering column that adjusts for reach would you believe. Everything works as it should.
It’s mileage of just under 37, 000 is believed to be correct, the car having spent 20 years in a private collection doing nothing ( we have the auction brochure for the collection) it has three sets of keys, its original buff logbook and an original handbook.
It is a really fun car to own and drive, the experience is completely different from that of a modern car. The steering is heavy but accurate, the brakes actually haul the car up pretty effectively and it is quite sprightly through the gears. The only reason for selling is to try something else.
