Description
1988 Volkswagen Golf GTI 8v – Tornado Red – 144k – Honest, usable Mk2
This is my 1988 Golf GTI 8v, affectionately known as Hildë. I’ve owned the car for around a year and it’s been an absolute joy to have. Every time I take it out it still puts a goofy smile on my face.
The only reason for sale is a recent separation and the need to free up funds for a house purchase. Otherwise this is a car I would happily keep.
This isn’t a concours showpiece or a freshly restored example. What it is, is a solid, honest Mk2 GTI that you can jump in and enjoy driving without worrying about every stone chip or mark. It presents very well for its age but still feels like a proper usable classic rather than a garage queen.
The car has covered 144k miles. At around 100k miles the previous owner replaced the instrument clocks after the originals malfunctioned, so the current clocks reflect that change.
Mechanically the car is in great shape and drives exactly how a Mk2 GTI should. It pulls well, feels tight and is just a genuinely fun car to use. I would happily drive it anywhere — last year it completed a round trip from West Yorkshire to London and back without missing a beat.
During my ownership the car has been looked after and has had the following work carried out:
Gear linkage replaced
New exhaust fitted from manifold to tip
It has also just had a full interior valet, so the cabin now presents very nicely and is clean and tidy for its age.
History
While clearing the car out recently I was very pleased to find the original service book, which contains stamps going all the way back to 1988.
From the stamps it appears the car has been serviced throughout its life by JW Morris in Leeds, a well-known Volkswagen specialist. This history helps tell the story of a car that has been maintained consistently over the years.
The V5 log book is present, along with the service book.
The honest bits
I want to be completely transparent so buyers know exactly what they’re coming to see.
The rear half of the headliner has sagged slightly after the bad winter weather
There is a small dent in the front quarter panel (visible in photos). I recently had it quoted for paintless dent removal at around £150
The aerial and radio are currently not working, however I do have replacements for both which will come with the car
The BBS alloys are in nice condition but would benefit from a light refurb if someone wanted them perfect
None of these affect how the car drives and they’re typical small jobs you tend to see on a usable classic of this age.
Overall
This is a really enjoyable, honest Mk2 GTI that’s ready to be driven and appreciated. It’s not a trailer queen, but it’s exactly the sort of car that reminds you why the Mk2 GTI has the reputation it does.
Cars like this are becoming harder to find — solid, mechanically sorted examples with genuine history that haven’t been over-restored or messed with.
If you’re looking for a usable classic GTI you can actually drive and enjoy, this could be the one.
