Description

Selling this much loved vehicle as now have no garage or space. It runs well, immaculate through-out and one of the best I have ever seen. The engine ticks over like a sewing machine, the over-drive is very quiet and the only time it doesn't start is if I forget to pull the choke out.

The hard top roof, side windows and rear door are provided as separate elements within the price of the vehicle. Currently it has a beige canvas hood fitted. I have done about 2000 miles in it. The previous owner who carried out the ground up refurbishment did 300 miles before selling so effectively travelled less than 2500 miles since refurbishment.
A beautiful old Land Rover but I am not using it enough (30 miles some years, going to tip and back) to justify it sitting there. I collected the vehicle on 2nd August 2013 from the northern engineering gent who completed this quality refurbishment.

What follows are his notes that was put on the Series 2a forum at the time he was selling to me:

I seem to get more pleasure out of doing up vehicles these days, rather than spending time driving them, so am considering starting a new project and parting with my 1966 SWB 2a. I am sure a few true rivet counters will find things wrong with it ( e. g. painted rear grab handles, halogen headlights, high back seats), but those can easily be changed by a purist. I have, however, tried to do a pretty comprehensive job.

The engine is an ex-military replacement (replaced before my time), but appears to be in good running order and only required new oil seals and water pump. Fuel pump and carb were rebuilt and dynamo replaced (old one is available). As far as I know everything else on the vehicle was “original” when I bought it, but I am afraid I haven’t gone round and got the numbers off all “dated” components. Everything has either been refurbished or replaced using new fasteners throughout.

NEW parts fitted include (I may have missed some!) : Richards galvy chassis, road springs and all fittings including bottom plates, shockers, complete braking system (Automec copper pipe, silicon fluid), brake drums, exhaust, rear half shafts and drive members, wheel bearings/ seals/ etc as required, clutch plate and all hydraulics/ slave cyl pivot, gearbox seals as required, handbrake shoes, all electrics (new loom/ dynamo/ control box lights), steering ball joints as required, 750x16 kingpin tyres on blaster and powder coated LWB rims (speedo changed to match), front wings complete (NOS), Rocky Mountain door tops, door bottoms, door handles/ locks/ hinges/ stainless bolts, rear tub crossmembers, fuel tank, front floor foot panels (the ally ones), bulkhead mudshields. Lasalle roof liner with acoustic foam underneath (the self adhesive carpet didn’t last!), all door/ window seals. Heavy duty battery. I am sure there is probably more!

REFURBISHED/ REBUILT: Bulkhead (waxoyled upside down), front headlight panel, new diff pan to front axle, steering box, all cappings stripped and regalvanised and correctly riveted in place, rear door reskinned,.

COMES WITH: Fully rebuilt Fairey overdrive (new mainshaft/ bearings/ seals etc). This unit is the quietest one I have ever had. Superwinch free wheeling hubs, 4 channel usb radio/ speakers (no extra holes drilled to fit this) Aux panel with coolant temp gauge.
Professional bare metal respray in correct Marine Blue/ Limestone. New hoses/ fluids/ filters throughout. Just passed MOT again this week with no advisories. I submitted V888 to DVLA so have quite a bit of vehicle history.

I will be showing it at Masham Steam Fair next Saturday and Newby Hall, Ripon on the Sunday (20th. And 21st July) (Nerwby Hall is a really good day - out 1500 vehicles and brilliant autojumble) if you would like to have a look.
(P. S The rear number plate appears to have always been on that side!

**** He was a wonderful chap and 'interviewed / chatted' with me over a few cups of coffee and cake before allowing me to drive it away. His charming wife and he obviously wanted to make sure it went to a good home.

I have added the canvas roof and frame which was bought brand new from Exmoor trim and 4 lap belts to the rear bench seats for the kids. Other than a brand new battery just bought it is as per the refurbishment. I added the rear mud flaps and glavanised step at rear.
