Description
The Series II was produced from 1958 to 1961, followed by the Series IIA from October 1961 until the summer of 1971. This updated version featured several improvements, including enhanced steering, strengthened differentials, and optional free‑wheel hubs. Its distinctive appearance remained unchanged until 1970, with the headlights still positioned within the radiator grille.
This particular Series IIA was built in 1968 and entered service with the army in 1969. That early military life is a real advantage - army vehicles are maintained meticulously, as they must always be ready for deployment.
In 1979, it was released from military service, sold into private ownership, and re-registered on 23 April 1979. Remarkably, the Land Rover has had only five owners in total, including the army.
Between 2017 and 2018, the vehicle underwent an extensive and expert frame-off restoration. All mechanical components were fully overhauled, returning the Land Rover to excellent health before being registered to its current owner.
The result is a beautifully restored Land Rover 88 Series IIA Soft Top—authentic, unmodified, and finished to a very high standard. Examples in this condition are increasingly rare. It presents wonderfully in Mid Grey paint, complemented by new Elephant Hide upholstery and a fresh canvas top.
A truly charming classic, straight out of a storybook - one that inspires admiration rather than envy, and delivers pure driving enjoyment.
