Description
1946 Chevrolet 1/ 2 ton Short bed Pickup.
Sadly the time has come to sell ‘Herb’ my 1946 Chevy Farm Truck.
He was built in St Louis, Missouri, in September 1946 and was the 267th Truck off the production line that year. He spent his whole life working on a Farm in Keenesburg, Weld County in Colorado (comes with original number plate) until his engine seized, when he was left parked in a field for over 30 years.
The neighbour tried many times to buy the Truck, and it wasn’t until the Farmer was on his death bed, that he let him have it.
The neighbour had too many other projects on the go at the time, so got the Truck up and running, by installing a brand new fuel tank and a second hand mid 1950’s Chevrolet 261 Chevrolet straight 6 cylinder engine, (in early 2023) and then Sold him, which is when I bought him!
I have owned the Truck for 3 years. I had him shipped to a good friend of mine in Kentucky, who is a Mechanic, who got Herb completely road worthy.
Handbrake. Brake work. Lights. Indicators. Tyres. Horn. Converted to 12v. etc etc.
I spent a small fortune on parts, new Windscreen and Side glass. Had the wind out windscreen regulator rebuilt. Had the cab Heater totally restored. Had the whole body sprayed in Matt Clear lacquer to preserve the look. All the external lights, Foglights, Searchlight & indicators all work. Windscreen wiper, Cigarette lighter, Cab Heater, Windscreen blower defrost, Handbrake, Brakes, Wind down cab windows, Oil pressure gauge all work. New 12volt Alternator & Fuel Tank & Battery in 2023. Bench Seat is in excellent condition.
I then flew out to Kentucky and drove the Truck 900 miles on an amazing and unforgettable journey of a lifetime, down to Houston, Texas over 10 days, where it was loaded into a Container and then shipped over here to the UK.
There are obviously a few quirks to owning such an old vehicle, but the smile it puts on your face when you drive it are well worth it and it never fails to draw attention and put smiles on other peoples faces.
So the reality of owning a Truck this old are:
It has no power steering.
You have to double de-clutch to change gear.
Top speed is 40mph.
This is an honest sale and I’d like to find a good home for Herb. I am only selling him, as I have 2 other Trucks over in America, and I need to start making room for the next project. The Truck is fully UK Registered and I have the V5 in my name. (Just FYI: Fully comp Insurance with limited mileage is approx £200 per year: but you could get cheaper I’m sure!)
Bad bits:
Herb was parked outdoors this Winter so some surface rust is showing through the lacquer in places: nothing a light sand and a rattle can won’t fix.
The engine is using oil, and always has done. I have driven approx 2, 000 miles like this and just top it up regularly on longer drives. It is not smoking, but uses oil so will ideally need a top end rebuild I guess: I am no mechanic. It does not use a drop of water.
I have already adjusted the price to reflect this, so don’t think you’ll be bidding me on that!
The wind out windscreen regulator needs a service as it has got stiff.
The bed has always rattled about, so needs properly fixing down.
Speedo and Fuel gauge have never worked.
The Old Fan mounted on Dashboard has never worked.
Passenger side Mirror & Wooden headboard in Pickup bed are not included in the Sale, as they will be going on my next Truck.
