Description
ONE OF ONLY 20, 230BHP FIVE SPEED PAGODAS
The ultimate Mercedes Benz 280 SL Pagoda: restored by a Pebble Beach judge and with engine maestro Laro Sportwagon rare enhanced performance mastery
This Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda is a particularly special example, finished in a flawless elegant silver exterior over the red leather interior that perfectly complements the timeless Paul Bracq design. Believed to be among the very first 100 280SL units produced, it was originally delivered to its first owner in Geneva, Switzerland, and has since enjoyed a privileged life. The vehicle was ordered with some very rare factory options including a limited slip differential and the wheels behind the iconic hubcaps are made of alloy not steel. These options together are on less than 2% of Pagoda production
The car benefits from a meticulous restoration carried out by renowned Pebble Beach judge Seigfried Linke, ensuring exceptional attention to detail and a presentation that is as striking as it is authentic. In addition, a series of discreet, well-considered upgrades have been integrated, designed to enhance the car’s dynamic abilities while preserving its classic character.
Among the most significant improvements is the engine work completed by Laro Sportwagen in Germany. These cars are extremely rare and highly sought after like Eagle Etypes Singer Porsches or Alfaholics GTA-Rs
The stroke of the original engine was increased to 3. 2 litres, raising torque substantially and lifting output from 175bhp to 230+ BHP—on par with the legendary Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing.
This work is complemented by a lowered and slightly stiffened suspension, a new performance exhaust system, and wider 225-profile tyres. The total cost of the upgrades exceeded €40, 000, and with fewer than a dozen examples produced, these Laro-tuned versions are exceptionally rare. While retaining the original engine—and thereby preserving the spirit, appearance, and authenticity of a standard 280 SL Pagoda—the transformation delivers performance and handling in an entirely different league.
This makes the Laro Pagoda on a par with or faster than contemporary Porsche 911s, Ferrari 246 Dino, Etype 4. 2 or BMW 3. 0CSL
Further refinements include the fitment of a 5-speed gearbox and an upgraded air-conditioning system, offering a substantial improvement over the original dealer-installed units.
Inside, a centre armrest by Atelier Bracq adds comfort, while the classic Becker radio has been modernised internally to provide 40x4 RMS output with Bluetooth, USB, and digital capability. This discreetly links to a high-quality speaker and subwoofer system. All lighting has also been upgraded with Halogen beams for improved functionality.
Meticulously maintained by its last owner and regularly serviced over the past eight years, the car is accompanied by substantial documentation. Adding further appeal, it retains its original Mercedes brochures, a complete set of service manuals, and a full maintenance history—underscoring the care it has received throughout its life.
On the road, this 280 SL truly excels. The sonorous straight-six delivers a smooth yet engaging soundtrack, perfectly matched to the car’s balance and precision. With the top down, it becomes the ideal companion for spirited open-air motoring, delivering performance to rival or surpass its period contemporaries.
This unique Pagoda captures the best of both worlds: the elegance and collectability of a rare early production model combined with the enhanced driving pleasure of thoughtful performance upgrades, making every journey a special occasion.
