Introduction
Chatham-Vault Automotive Hibernation Centre are pleased to present this exceptional 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250 SL ‘Pagoda’ A beautifully preserved example finished in the timeless and highly desirable combination of metallic silver over a rich red interior. A specification that pays quiet homage to Mercedes-Benz’s ‘Silver Arrows’ heritage, and one that remains among the most coveted for the W113 series.
Overview
The 250 SL represents one of the most compelling chapters within the W113 ‘Pagoda’ lineage. Produced for a brief period, it combines the delicacy and visual purity of the 230 SL with meaningful mechanical advancements that would later define the 280 SL.
Increasingly recognised by collectors as the most balanced iteration of the series, the early 250 SL offers a uniquely appealing blend of elegance, usability, and rarity—qualities that continue to underpin its growing desirability in today’s market.
Provenance
Originally supplied to North America. First registered in Chicago in August 1967, this example benefits from early servicing at authorised Mercedes-Benz dealerships, predominantly in California. The original service booklet records 14 entries through to 1976.
Following a period of long-term storage, the car underwent comprehensive recommissioning prior to its import to the United Kingdom in 2012. Since then, it has been carefully maintained within private ownership, with just two custodians recorded.
More recently forming part of a carefully curated private collection, the car has been maintained and exercised with notable diligence. Seasonal use has been complemented by monthly commissioning and careful warm-up procedures, alongside light road use during favourable conditions as part of our premium storage programme.
The accompanying history file includes MOT certificates, invoices, and supporting documentation, providing a clear and reassuring record of its life in the UK.
Specification
Finished in metallic silver with a contrasting red interior, this example is presented in one of the most iconic and sought-after colour combinations available on the W113.
The car is offered with both a body-coloured removable hardtop and a black folding soft-top, providing versatility across seasons. It sits on correct 14-inch steel wheels with body-coloured centres and chrome hubcaps, fitted with period-style whitewall tyres.
The interior retains a high degree of originality, featuring VDO instrumentation, a Becker Europa radio, and the classic two-spoke steering wheel. The seats, previously refurbished, present in excellent order, while the dashboard and trim remain particularly well preserved.
Condition
In preparation for sale, the vehicle has been serviced by respected marque specialists, Milton Auto Services, and further benefits from a fresh MOT with no advisories, along with a set of period-correct whitewall tyres—enhancing both its aesthetic presence and driving experience.
This is a notably well-presented example, reflective of careful ownership and considered maintenance.
The paintwork and brightwork are in excellent condition, and the car has clearly benefited from indoor storage and selective use. The interior displays a light, sympathetic patina consistent with its age, while remaining exceptionally well maintained throughout.
Minor, isolated age-related wear is present, as expected, though it does little to detract from what is, overall, a highly impressive and usable example.
Mechanical
Powered by the 2. 5-litre inline-six engine and paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, the car delivers smooth, refined performance in keeping with its grand touring character.
The vehicle has benefited from ongoing maintenance, including:
Cylinder head gasket replacement (2016)
Comprehensive fuel system overhaul (circa £5, 000)
Routine servicing including spark plugs and valve seals (2021)
Replacement rear brake callipers and further servicing (2023)
The engine bay presents well overall, with only minor cosmetic ageing noted.
Supplied with its spare wheel and original toolkit.
Investment Perspective ‘A moment in Mercedes-Benz History’
Produced for a brief period between the 230 SL and 280 SL, the 250 SL occupies a unique and often underappreciated position within the W113 lineage. Early examples such as this retain the delicate chrome detailing and interior refinement of the 230 SL, while benefiting from significant mechanical advancements, including the introduction of the seven-bearing M129 engine and rear disc brakes.
Later production cars adopted elements of the 280 SL, often at the expense of some of the earlier car’s purity. As a result, early 250 SLs are now regarded by many enthusiasts as the most balanced and aesthetically resolved iteration of the Pagoda.
Early 250 SL examples are increasingly recognised as one of the most nuanced and collectible variants within the W113 series. With production spanning a notably short period, and with many later cars adopting revised trim and specification, well-preserved early examples such as this are becoming progressively harder to source.
Presented in a highly desirable colour combination, supported by strong provenance, and maintained to a high standard, this example represents a particularly compelling opportunity for both the collector and enthusiast alike.
Summary
This is a motor car that combines rarity, usability, and understated elegance in equal measure—offered with a strong history, timeless specification and condition that will appeal to the most discerning collector or enthusiast
