UNFINISHED PROJECT - BMW E28 M535 + S54 M3 engine, 6speed Manual + Parts
* THIS IS NOT FOR BREAKING - I DO NOT AND WILL NOT SELL PARTS/ SPARES
This is my 1986 E28 M535 unfinished S54 (E46 M3 engine + manual 420G gearbox) project.
Available as a whole, ready to go project to create an amazing vehicle.
My intention has always been to create the ultimate S54 powered E28, but time has now run away from me, it’s been sat here for a couple of years now and I’ve decided to sell it.
I did all of the engine work and completed the engine rebuild, bought and planned almost all of the major parts required, just fitting and tidying/ upgrading the E28 remains.
It is currently stored at my work unit and needs to go, so this is an amazing bargain (cost me double what I’m asking for) for someone wanting an interesting and rewarding project.
I’m an ex-BMW technician and worked for years on these old 80/ 90/ 2000s BMWs and S54s, so the engine work etc has been carried out to a BMW standard.
S54 (2003) Engine + Gearbox:
Engine (including vanos) is all fully built and sealed (this was one thing that was finished), all cleaned and ready.
Came from a 2003 M3 manual Cab with 84k. It had service history, was running very nicely, but had a vanos rattle.
Big end bearings weren’t very worn, but I replaced with ACL bearings.
Engine:
* Fully refurbed/ rebuilt Vanos (new seals, solenoid coil pack, seal plate, oil pump disc,
* Bottom end refurb/ upgrade (ACL race bearings, ARP bolts)
* VAC Oil pump upgrade + Oil pump
* New water pump + thermostat
* Secondary air pump delete
* New upper cam chain guide
* E34 sump pan (vapour blasted) sealed/ fitted
* Custom S54-to-E28 engine mount brackets
* Original manifold
* All plastic covers, trims, airbox etc
Gearbox:
* Getrag 420G 6-speed manual (from the same 2003 84k E46)
* Custom gearbox mount (this was made for an E30 and needs adapting to E28 chassis)
* New (still in box) Lux clutch kit + bearings
* New (still in box) Lux Flywheel
Wiring + ECU:
* Custom wiring harness - custom made for this RHD E28+S54/ manual
* ECU - flashed and with…EWS delete, Cats delete, Secondary air pump delete, Sport button function
Various:
* Custom/ upgraded E28 prop-shaft centre bearing
* E28 manual pedal box
* E28 custom/ upgraded clutch pedal re-enforcement bracket (I have about 20pcs of these in a box, as when I had it custom made I made 20+pcs of them)
* Loads of boxes of original parts, all ancillaries included, starter, hoses
* NOS expansion tank
* 4 x keys
* Cam positioning/ holding tools included
* Heavy duty cover
Car:
1986 M535 E28 (The original M30 engine/ auto-box was removed and is not included)
Great spec and everything was working, original bronzed glass sunroof etc
Had an MOT and ran well when I bought it and started the project in 2021
135k miles
Original M Body Kit in exceptional condition, with towing eye covers etc.
LSD
Hartge 16” wheels
Various docs/ handbook etc
Good points of the E28: It was a solid and running M535iA when I started - lots of good points for an ’86 M535, great spec and interior is exceptional, new dash, rear blind, s/ roof, everything working etc…a really good example for this project. Everything was present and correct in original M535.
It is generally a very nice car.
Bad points of E28: Had a few bodgy (not as I would’ve done) patches welded over the years…patched cill and front suspension turret, was resprayed in the 2000/ 2010s into a blue colour, not amazing, but certainly not bad (originally diamond black). Boot lip (where the boot seals fit) is rusting, other minor rusting on doors etc wasn’t that bad, but does need some fabrication in general in the usual spots. LSD, and running gear in general, has surface rust and I intended to sandblast and powder coat…but essentially all in good working order.
Remaining components required:
Custom exhaust
Custom/ adapted prop shaft
Oil cooler
Radiator
Rubber engine mounts (for the included custom E28/ S54 engine mount brackets)
I have all the pics, emails, invoices etc for the above - far too much to list here, but is all available to see at my unit at WN2 4AU.
