Description

VBT 803J is one of the very first Honda PC50 K1’s produced and registered in September 1970. The K1 saw a new OHV engine replace the original OHC but this is a crossover chassis that enjoys a few features from the old model also. Being a fan of the PC50, we own five at this time and have restored dozens plus the older P50s and PF versions and even the Europe only 3-speed PS. The original buff log book was transferred by the first owner in 1977 there are also old MOT certificates from this time in Bridlington, Yorkshire, prior to its move north to Dalkeith in Scotland where it would spend most of its life. It was used rarely and by the 80’s put into a shed where it remained until February 2021 when the new owner (a local in Dalkeith) rescued a rather sorry looking Honda. A few months later, we acquired it from him, originally for parts and transported it to the south coast when after a detailed inspection we found it was totally solid and a rare example. Certainly, the original Rat Grey finish was patchy but any corrosion was surface whilst the failed rims and spokes could be replaced. Being a crossover 69/ 70 example it came with all grey rear shocks, a cush-drive rear sprocket and largely unmarked grey mudguards items not often found (or updated) on later 71-onwards versions. We made the decision to restore whilst retaining the wonderful character of the grey frame which was ‘flatted’ down in three stages prior to a machine compound leaving a great base for several coats of two pack lacquer. New rims sourced from Mopedland with stainless spokes supplied by Alex Warwick. Refurbished hubs, fresh bearings and shoes with rebuilt wheels clothed in tubes and Continental white wall tyres. The original engine ran but smoked and was tired and as we had one rebuilt and ready it was installed with new chain, sprockets and exhaust. The only negative is the ‘Achillies heal’ of the PC50 being the speedo drive tag washer, these bend and are no longer available which stops the cable turning; the speedo unit and milometer work fine. Just one of our five PC’s has a working speedo although Mopedland state they are awaiting a batch to be produced, frustrating when the part cost a couple of pounds. Ironically the chance of braking the speed limit are rare on a PC50, with a top speed of 28mph that said, the four-stroke motor offers good acceleration and reliability which is the best of any 70s moped. Luckily the fuel tank was empty when stored and cleaned out easily, along with its opposing tool box finished in the correct (2 pack) Cloud White and new graphics sourced. It has been four years since the restoration was completed with the plan to keep this one but space is becoming tight with three more PC’s in the garage this rather unusual example is offered for sale. Any test/ viewings welcome, build images and video is available, Owners Manual plus V5 registered ‘historic’ and priced to sell so I am firm on the price ... questions please just ask.
