BACKGROUND FOR THE MODEL
Two years after the original coupé's introduction in 1964, a convertible 911 - the 'Targa', named in honour of Porsche's numerous victories in the Sicilian classic - became available. Expected US safety legislation had prompted an ingenious approach to the first soft-top 911, the Targa sporting a hefty roll-over bar to protect the occupants in the event of an inversion, together with removable roof and rear hood sections, which were stowable in the boot. An enormous success for the Stuttgart firm, the much loved and instantly recognisable Targa finally bowed out at end of the 1990s, when the Cabriolet became the sole open-topped 911 with the introduction of the Type 996 range for 1999.
Targa development proceeded in line with that of its closed coupé cousin, the most notable advances immediately prior to the manufacture of this example having included the introduction of the 3. 2-litre engine for 1984. Although it remained an air-cooled 'flat six', the '3. 2' was 80% new and incorporated an effective cam chain tensioner and associated lubrication system that at last addressed a perennial 911 shortcoming. With 231bhp on tap the new 'boxer' motor endowed the Carrera with a level of performance approaching that of the original 911 Turbo of 1974, the bald statistics being a 0-60mph time of 5. 3 seconds and a top speed of 152mph. Prior to current ownership, this right-hand drive Porsche 911 Carrera Targa had only 2 owners: father and son. Garaged from new, the car has covered 121, 500 miles, has 17 stamps in the service booklet from a mix of official Porsche centres and marque specialists, and comes with 14 invoices for various services and other minor works.
It was last serviced (by Porsche Centre Wilmslow) on 7th August 2023 at 119, 000 miles, so it has only covered 2000 miles since the last service and has benefitted from fresh MOT inspections and some minor adjustments since. PCW's accompanying condition report gives the car a 'green' (satisfactory) rating in every respect. Finished in red with black leather interior, this Carrera Targa has been kept in original condition. The patina is lovely and the only area that has been repainted is the bonnet, due to stone chips - and prior to my ownership. The rest of the paint is original. Earlier this year, I had the roof lining of the targa top professionally recovered, in order to preserve its usability as a convertible. At the same time, I had the passenger side, electric window mechanism replaced as it had started to slow.
In essence this is a very sound, original car that has never let me down and drives great. Worth noting this was high spec from the factory, with working electric seats and electric windows.
The sole reason for sale is the loss of my garage storage in the near future and this car deserves to be looked after. So very reluctantly I have to let it go. This is a genuine, honest, original car that seems to have been lovingly looked after all of its life. Now an historic vehicle that has just become MOT and tax free.
They’re only original once.
