Description
Introduced in 1984, the Porsche 911 Carrera 3. 2 represents the culmination of the legendary G-generation. Fitted with the famous 3, 164 cc flat-six, producing 231 bhp on European-spec models, it blends performance, reliability, and driving enjoyment like no other classic 911. Thanks to its Bosch Motronic fuel injection, its well-proven robustness, and its outstanding road manners, the Carrera 3. 2 is today regarded as one of the most iconic and most sought-after Porsches of the 1980s.
The cabriolet, introduced in 1983, delivers the pleasure of top-down motoring without compromising the 911’s dynamic qualities. Even rarer is the factory Turbo Look version (option M491), which takes on the spectacular styling of the 911 Turbo: flared wider wings, specific Fuchs wheels, strengthened running gear, upgraded suspension and a powerful braking system derived from the 930 Turbo—while still retaining the more progressive character and mechanical simplicity of the 3. 2 Carrera’s naturally aspirated engine. Particularly expensive at the time, this option was produced in very small numbers and is now among the most coveted configurations by collectors.
The car presented here is a factory-built Porsche 911 Carrera 3. 2 Cabriolet Turbo Look. It was produced on 16 January 1985 and delivered new to the American market. Its Porsche Certificate of Origin (Geburtsurkunde) confirms that this is an authentic 911 Cabrio TL, equipped from new with the highly desirable M491 Turbo Look pack. It also verifies that the original engine and gearbox are present, perfectly matching the production numbers—an aspect that collectors place especially high value on.
Beyond the prestigious M491 pack, this 911 also benefitted from a particularly comprehensive specification for the period. It was fitted with the sport steering wheel with raised hub (option 018), the convertible top protective cover (option 070), central locking (option 341), a passenger seat with electric adjustment (option 438), and cruise control (option 454)—still relatively uncommon in the mid-1980s. This original configuration, fully reflected on the Porsche certificate, further enhances the appeal of this example.
During its life, this Carrera was carefully converted for European specification to meet European market requirements. It therefore received, among other things, European headlights and an instrument cluster graduated in kilometres per hour—giving it today the appearance of a true European-market Carrera, while still retaining traceability to its American origins.
This car is also accompanied by its original service book, its Porsche certificate, and a folder of invoices covering the most recent years, providing particularly welcome documentation.
Between 2017 and 2018, it underwent a major mechanical restoration with a Porsche specialist. The engine was completely removed and rebuilt, with the replacement of bearings, guides and valves, the re-machining of the valve seats and sealing faces, replacement of the cylinder head studs, piston rings, timing chains, and numerous ancillary components. The injectors were cleaned ultrasonically, the alternator and starter motor were overhauled, and the driveshafts were refurbished with new gaiters fitted, while many finishing, cleaning and refurbishment operations were also carried out. The total amounts to more than €25, 000 in invoices, reflecting the care taken with this car over the years.
Rare in its specification, authenticated by its Porsche Certificate of Origin (matching numbers), supplied with its service book, Porsche certificate and an extensive set of invoices, this factory Porsche 911 Carrera 3. 2 Cabriolet Turbo Look represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the most desirable versions of the G-generation. It combines the iconic lines of the 930 Turbo, the driving pleasure of the Carrera’s naturally aspirated engine, and impeccably documented provenance—making it a top-tier classic for collectors.
