Description
1991 Mini Mayfair
The very last of the 998 minis, this lovely little Mayfair has just undergone a thorough recommissioning after being laid up in a barn since 2006. The car spent almost it's entire life as a little run around on the streets of Marlborough, for the first lady owner, who subsequently sold the car to her son, a mini aficionado. It was later sold to a friend, who seems to have made a good start on restoring the car before getting bogged down. The car then spent 20 years in a barn before a house move forced it's sale.
Although being stood meant the car didn't run and needed extensive work, has meant this car retains many of the original panels, unlike it's contemporaries which are on their second or even third restoration. I was particularly pleased to note the scuttle is original and does not have repair panels fitted, those who know their minis will know how expensive poor repairs in this location can become. I have spent considerable amounts of time getting this car back on the road and it is now a good honest example which is ready for use.
The car has had new fuel lines front to back and the tank has been cleaned out, a full service, and some welding to the boot and rear valance. The car is solid, with no rust, and the little 998 engine runs sweetly after a good service and a proper tuneup using a wideband to get the fuelling just so. The gearbox changes gear without crunching, and the car is a pleasure to drive. The brakes have been gone through, with new rear wheel cylinders, new shoes, and new pipes made up. The car stops well, and benefits from the servo assistance featured on later cars.
I have fitted a new clutch master and slave cylinder, and the previous owner has fitted a new rear subframe at some point as it's very solid. I have thoroughly cleaned and rustproofed the underside of the car so it should remain rust free for years to come.
This offers a fantastic opportunity to purchase a sorted little mini, which is ready to use and does not require huge amounts of investment upfront.
It recently passed it's MOT on the 7th of May, and is currently undergoing preparation for sale this week.
