Triumph TR6 CR with overdrive – 1973 Magenta
Mileage – currently 49 miles but increasing as it's still being run in!
The car was fully rebuilt over the last few years for me with a build concept of trying to keep the original car as much as possible but with some modifications to make it more usable. Therefore no expense was spared as I didn’t plan to sell it. However due to a back injury I can no longer enjoy the car that I have spent the time building. The parts bill is more than I’m asking let alone the hundreds of hours spent rebuilding it.
I purchased it as a box of bits ‘barn find’ in 2020 the car had apparently been dismantled in 1990 with 53, 281miles on the clock and dry stored. This added up as with the condition of the body and chassis it only required minor metal replacement to bring it up to standard.
All perishable items were scrap but the main metal items were all there. Therefore it has the original engine, gearbox and differential.
The engine was found to have a bent camshaft which showed signs of overheating which might explain why the car was taken off the road. The engine has been completely rebuilt and head converted to unleaded fuel. The old Lucas fuel injection was removed and electronic fuel injection installed. It starts first time and idles well.
Everything on the car is either new or refurbished and it’s almost easier to list the original bits rather than new. I’ve listed below the main items on the build of the car.
Body and chassis
• Chassis bare metal, only repair new lower breast plate then coated in POR 15
• Body stripped, some minor metalwork repairs and new original colour Magenta paint. Undersealed on arches and under floor
Mechanicals
• Engine bottom end rebuild, machine work by Gosnay’s. Bearings machined for camshaft rather than riding against the block
• Classic fuel injection electronic ignition and fuel injection and fuel lines.
• Cylinder head has unleaded work completed, skimmed and valves recut
• Gearbox dismantled and examined but very low wear so new seals and some bearings and rebuilt. J type overdrive on 3rd and 4th gears
• Differential was dismantled checked and rebuilt with new bearings and seals.
• All suspension completely rebuilt and new dampers
• Everything on brakes new, pipes, master cylinder, callipers etc.
• Everything on clutch new, pipes, master and slave cylinders, cover and plate
• Sports big bore stainless exhaust and 6-in-3-in-1 into manifold
• Fuel tank cleaned, pressure tested and painted
• Radiator re-cored and heater matrix pressure tested.
• New hoses throughout
Electrical
• New battery
• New alternator
• Electric cooling fan
• All gauges refurbished by Smiths expert
• New front wiring loom, rear was OK
• New inertia cut off valve
• No radio or speakers so the new owner can either enjoy the sound of the exhaust or fit their choice.
Body and interior
• Wheels blasted and powder coated with new tyres and spare to match
• New chrome nuts
• New stainless steel bumpers front and rear
• New hood on stripped and painted frame
• New wipers and arms, original windscreen, new windscreen rubber.
• New Walnut dash
• New interior trim, crash pads, door trims, boot trim and carpets
• MX5 Mk1 seats (have the original TR ones if preferred)
• Inertia reel belts
Other
• 11 months MOT (although not necessary)
