Description

Capots Vintage, specialist in Sport & Collection vehicles in Lyon, is pleased to present this automobile—carefully selected and accompanied by a detailed presentation.

Presented in its superb original Pastellblau shade, this 1975 BMW 2002 perfectly illustrates what made the 02 Series such a success: a simple, elegant and timeless silhouette, matched with genuine driving pleasure. Built at the factory on 16 September 1975, it now benefits from a historic vehicle registration document and shows just 83, 200 km.

Launched in 1968, the BMW 2002 played a major part in establishing BMW’s sporting reputation. With its 2-litre engine, rear-wheel drive and its well-controlled weight, it offered a particularly successful blend of performance, everyday versatility and driving enjoyment. A formula that would directly inspire the future generations of the 3 Series.

This car is part of the latest evolution of the model, commonly referred to as Phase 2. The front end is distinguished by its modernised black grille, framed by the iconic twin round headlights. The famous chrome BMW “double kidney” sits proudly at the centre, while the chrome trim and door/ side mouldings—still in very nice condition—elegantly underline the bodywork lines. The yellow main-beam lamps reinforce its sporty character and hark back to the BMWs that competed in the 1970s.

This 2002 is fitted with Cosmic alloy wheels—an accessory particularly appreciated by BMW 2002 owners at the time.

At the rear, it retains all the understated character that defines the model: a deck with clean, taut lines; the rectangular tail lights specific to the latest versions; and a simple “2002” badge for all the branding.

One of the BMW 2002’s great strengths lay in its versatility. Where many performance cars of its era demanded compromises, it offered four genuine seats as well as a generous boot—equally suited to day-to-day trips and long journeys.

Step inside and you’re instantly in the atmosphere of the 1970s. The simple, functional horizontal dashboard carries large, easy-to-read analog dials. The three-spoke steering wheel, trimmed in leather and fitted to replace the original, provides excellent grip while staying true to the model’s spirit.

The interior presentation is enhanced with several wood-effect trim details, including on the door panels, the dashboard, the instrument surround, the gear lever and the centre console. Without trying to imitate the luxury of a grand tourer, these touches bring warmth and a very authentic 1970s character to the cabin.

The seats have been retrimmed exactly alike in a beautiful deep navy blue velvet, in perfect harmony with the exterior Pastellblau paint. The period radio is still present and adds significantly to the charm of the whole. The cabin is, today, in a very good state of preservation.

Under the bonnet sits the famous BMW four-cylinder engine of 1, 990 cm³ producing 100 bhp, paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox. Flexible, eager and particularly lively, this engine is one of the main ingredients behind the success of the 2002. With a limited weight of just 1, 035 kg, it still delivers driving pleasure that remains very much current today.

Restored in 2010 in terms of bodywork, mechanicals and upholstery, this BMW 2002 presents today in very good overall condition. It also received, more recently, a significant mechanical overhaul aimed at improving reliability. The braking system has been completely reworked, the cooling circuit has been revised with replacement of the radiator and all the hoses, while the gearbox shift linkage has also been redone. Four new tyres have additionally been fitted.

Rare in this elegant original Pastellblau shade, this BMW 2002 represents a great opportunity for enthusiasts looking to own one of the most iconic models in BMW history.
