The Austin Westminster A95 Six cylinder was originally assembled in South Africa. We purchased after the vehicle was shipped to the UK approx. 10 years ago. The overall bodywork condition was in good order. I still decided to completely restore the vehicle.
Works included full respray, re-chroming, full engine rebuild, new clutch, fuel tank internal lined, new carpets throughout, new door trim cards, full leather seat recovering by a Jaguar employee (side line) fully rewired using heat resistant wiring, Wheels resprayed, new tyres, new brakes, new battery, heater installed as not fitted on original car, screen washer system added, radiator refurbished.
The Westminster is stored in our garage, covered up, and not driven in the rain since restored.
The Westminster A95 Six is probably the best example available. Much admired by many at Bicester Heritage at their classic car events.
The car starts first time every time, all gears work smoothly.
We have recently purchased an off road Land Rover for green lane driving, and need the garage space.
DVLA demanded complete verification of the provenance of the vehicle. This included verification of all chassis and engine numbers by the Austin owners club (now closed). Documentation from the South African transport department. In all by the time DVLA issued the V5C it took nearly 18 months. Plenty of time to restore the car.
Back in the 1950's cars being exported from Britain were heavily taxed. To get around the export tax Austin cars destined for South Africa were shipped in parts, then assembled in a South African factory ready for sale.
