Description
Genuine UK-market 2002 Volkswagen Golf GTI 25th Anniversary TDI 150, finished in Reflex Silver and carrying factory-numbered plaque No. 1778. This largely original three-door example has covered 152, 347 miles and is offered honestly as a restoration project.
The Anniversary interior is in fantastic condition. It retains the red-and-black Recaro Le Mans seats, black headlining, red-stitched steering wheel, golf-ball gear knob, brushed-alloy trim, aluminium pedals, GTI sill plates, red-trimmed belts and mats, Climatronic, original VW audio with six-disc changer, electric windows and mirrors, remote central locking, ABS and a Parrot Bluetooth system.
Exterior specification includes genuine 18-inch BBS RC wheels, Anniversary front and rear styling, side skirts, sports suspension, red brake calipers and darkened headlights.
The car starts, runs and drives, but it has no current MOT following its latest test. The report records a seriously weakened front brake disc as a dangerous defect; exhaust emissions above the manufacturer's specified limit; an oil leak believed to be from the rocker-cover gasket; a split track-rod-end dust cover; a damaged steering-rack gaiter; and front-sill corrosion in a prescribed structural area. Advisories include a binding service brake, suspension-bush wear and rear subframe-bush wear. The full report and history file can be inspected with the vehicle.
The vehicle had been standing and largely undriven for approximately two years before the MOT. Since then, the engine has regularly been brought to its normal operating temperature of around 90°C, with no visible exhaust smoke observed by the owner. This is an honest observation, not confirmation that the emissions issue has been rectified. The believed rocker-cover-gasket diagnosis should also be verified by the buyer.
A comprehensive service and maintenance history is supplied, including invoices and supporting paperwork. Recorded cambelt changes were carried out at approximately 65, 000 and 123, 000 miles. The V5C and original Volkswagen book pack are present. One key and a Golf-specific dog guard are included.
This is not advertised as a ready-to-use car. Because it has no current MOT and the brake defect is classed as dangerous, collection must be by trailer or transporter. Viewing is welcome by appointment and a walk-around video is available on request.
The appeal of this car is its originality. Genuine Mk4 GTI 25th Anniversary TDI 150 examples are increasingly difficult to find with their numbered plaque, model-specific interior and distinctive factory equipment still together.
No. 1778 offers an enthusiast a complete and worthwhile basis for restoration rather than a car that has lost its Anniversary identity. The fantastic Recaro interior is a particular highlight, while the genuine BBS RC wheels, Anniversary styling and substantial history file make this an appealing opportunity for somebody who understands the model.
It is being presented openly, with the MOT defects clearly described, so a prospective buyer can assess the work required and make an informed decision. In the right hands, this rare and characterful Mk4 deserves to be properly recommissioned and enjoyed again.
