A rare opportunity to own a genuine VW Golf 2. 0 GTI Colour Concept Cabriolet, finished in yellow with the fantastic factory yellow and black full-leather Recaro interior.
The Colour Concept was one of the most distinctive versions of this generation, with its colour-coordinated Recaro leather and unique trim. Yellow examples are now particularly difficult to find, with very few believed to remain on UK roads.
I bought the car a few years ago, after which it remained in storage until this summer. I’ve now undertaken a substantial recommissioning programme to get it back on the road and driving as it should.
Work carried out during my ownership includes:
* Replacement gearbox from an 87k-mile donor car
* Replacement gear linkage
* New battery
* Full service
* New ignition switch, curing the previous starting issue
* Replacement window regulator
* oil breather pipes and engine bay general refresh
* Soft top re-dyed and waterproofed
* General mechanical recommissioning
* MOT – currently 11 months remaining with no advisories
It now runs and drives superbly. The 2. 0-litre engine is responsive, the replacement gearbox feels excellent and the car handles really well. It also sounds great through the Scorpion stainless-steel exhaust without being excessive.
It sits on OZ Racing alloy wheels with tyres that have plenty of tread remaining. The electric hood works correctly, as do the electric windows and mirrors.
Huge history file
The history is one of the car’s strongest points. It retains its original service history with numerous stamps from earlier in its life, including Volkswagen dealer servicing, together with a large collection of invoices and receipts covering servicing, maintenance and repairs over the years.
The cambelt and water pump were changed at approximately 115, 000 miles.
For a car of this age, it’s a reassuringly substantial history file and helps document its life rather than leaving its past to guesswork.
The yellow and black leather Recaro interior remains one of the highlights of the car and is what really distinguishes the Colour Concept from a standard Golf Cabriolet.
The car presents well overall for its age, but I’m not advertising it as a concours example. There are some areas of corrosion that would be the obvious next jobs for somebody wanting to improve it further.
These are mainly around the nearside rear quarter/ wing, including the rear wheel arch, an area near the rear side window and a smaller area beginning to appear by the rear light. I’ve deliberately included clear photographs of these areas in the advert. Not picked up on the mot and not believed to be structural but I have as yet not delved further into this.
Overall the paintwork is nice and presentable, with age related marks as would be expected with a 27 years old car with original paint.
The front seats would now benefit from a re-dye as the yellow is now fading. The leather and padding is in great condition so relatively easy to do. Rear seats and door cards are in good condition, as are vehicle carpets etc.
It’s therefore an honest, usable modern classic that can be enjoyed immediately, with scope for a future owner to improve the bodywork over time.
Why I’m selling
I’ve enjoyed getting the Golf recommissioned and back on the road, but I have another modern classic that I want to concentrate my time and money on.
I’m therefore in no rush to sell and would rather it went to somebody who appreciates what it is.
With the distinctive Recaro interior, huge history file, OZ Racing wheels, Scorpion exhaust and the recent mechanical work already completed, it’s a characterful and increasingly difficult-to-find example of a very ’90s Volkswagen special edition.
