R53 MINI COOPER S — A MODERN CLASSIC IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION
A very special R53 Cooper S, offered for sale privately after more than five years of careful ownership. One of the first produced, delivered September '02.
There are plenty of R53 MINIs for sale. Increasingly, however, there are very few that can genuinely be described as unspoiled, properly maintained and exceptional examples.
This is one of them.
We purchased the car directly from its original owners in 2021, when it had covered just 35, 000 miles. Due to travel restrictions at the time we asked if the original owner could take it to MINI Specialists Deutsch Tech in Milton Keynes to have it inspected. After carrying out the inspection the only thing they could find was slight corrosion on one of the brake pipes.
Since then, it has been owned and maintained with one objective: to preserve what makes an R53 Cooper S such an appealing modern classic, while ensuring it remains mechanically as good as it can be. After collecting he car, we in fact dropped the car in Manchester with a recommended MINI specialist GSR53, who carried out a supercharger service and some other preventative work, travelling back down a couple of weeks later to collect and finally bring it home to Scotland.
The car has continued to benefit from extensive preventative maintenance, rather than simply having things repaired when they failed. The result is a car that has not only driven beautifully, but has also achieved advisory-free MOT’s since 2021.
We’ve genuinely enjoyed owning the car. It hasn’t simply sat in a garage being polished and preserved — it has been used for the occasional proper MINI adventure, including taking on the North Coast 500, where it proved exactly why the R53 remains such an engaging and entertaining car to drive.
ORIGINALITY MATTERS
The car has deliberately been left essentially as MINI intended.
There are no performance modifications, no tuning and no cosmetic alterations.
The only deviation from its original specification is the rear exhaust box, which was replaced by the original owner with a Milltek item. It gives the car a slightly deeper and more characterful exhaust note without fundamentally changing the driving experience.
Even the originally specified MINI Disc player remains in place — a detail that may seem insignificant today, but is increasingly important when trying to preserve the authenticity of a modern classic.
PROVENANCE & HISTORY
The car comes with a substantial history file presented in a dedicated lever-arch binder, containing a comprehensive collection of paperwork relating to the car.
CONDITION
The car is in truly exceptional condition. It has been cherished, carefully maintained and preserved rather than modified or cosmetically “improved”. It retains the character and integrity of an original R53 while benefiting from the preventative maintenance you would hope to find in an enthusiast-owned modern classic.
We are not presenting this as simply another used R53.
This is a car we have owned, enjoyed and invested in for over five years — and one we would be very happy to continue owning.
The decision to sell is therefore a genuine one, and finding the right home is considerably more important to us than simply achieving a sale.

The car comes with two keys, original wallet, and a complete record of all invoices spent on servicing and preventative maintenance including supercharger service etc. within a lever arch file. Additionally all supporting period dealer marketing materials, magazine reviews and go mini magazines that launched in the early 2000's.
