An exceptional, highly specified and thoroughly sorted early R129 500 SL, owned and maintained by me without compromise for the past eight years.
Built in May 1992 and first registered in Japan in 1993, this is the desirable early R129. 066, powered by Mercedes-Benz's superb 5. 0-litre M119 V8 with KE-Jetronic injection. Importantly, these early cars predate the troublesome biodegradable engine wiring harness associated with later V8 R129s.
Finished in factory 199 Blue-Black Metallic over Anthracite leather, with period-correct satin-grey lower bodywork, original amber indicators and black soft top. Just 102, 000 km and completely rust-free. Bodywork and leather interior are in exceptional condition.
Extremely high factory specification includes electric memory/ heated seats, electrically adjustable steering column and interior mirror, folding exterior mirrors, cruise control, ASR, passenger airbag, automatic climate control, headlamp wash/ wipe, heat-insulating glass and factory eight-hole alloys.
Everything works as it should, including the electric equipment, cruise control, roof and climate control. A/ C was professionally regassed recently and blows ice cold.
Throughout my ownership it has been maintained on one simple basis: anything it needed, it received. Significant work includes a gearbox rebuild, engine mounts, suspension work, M119 ignition/ distributor maintenance and extensive servicing and preventative maintenance. All convertible-roof hydraulic cylinders have been refurbished. A new black soft top was fitted in 2024 and a new headliner has also been fitted.
Comes with its flawless matching factory hardtop with heated rear screen, proper storage stand, wind deflector and high-quality bespoke car cover.
Exceptionally complete, with original service book, owner's manuals/ book pack, extensive invoices and history, full set of keys including valet key and replacement keys in the period Mercedes-Benz presentation box. Original first-aid kit, warning triangle, toolkit and jack are all present. Even the spare is the correct matching eight-hole alloy. Comes complete with high quality bespoke cover, hard top stand & cover and also wind deflector.

Originally one private owner in Japan before being imported by the specialist garage from whom I purchased it. I bought it before it entered meaningful private use in the UK and have now owned it for eight years – in practical terms, just two long-term private owners.
Selling only because after eight very enjoyable years it's time for somebody else to enjoy it while I turn my attention to another classic Mercedes project.
This is not an R129 that needs to be bought and then sorted. It has already been sorted.
