The SSR History
The SSR began life as a concept vehicle unveiled at the 2000 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Its distinctive retro styling was inspired by Chevrolet's Advance Design pickup trucks of the late 1940s and early 1950s.
Following the reaction to the concept, Chevrolet took the unusual decision to put it into production. The SSR arrived for the 2003 model year and was manufactured at GM's specialist Lansing Craft Centre in Michigan until production ended in 2006.
In total, only around 24, 000 SSRs were produced, making it a relatively rare vehicle and a particularly unusual sight in the UK.
The One to Own
The later 2005–2006 6. 2L V8 models are the SSRs to own. They offered substantially improved performance compared with the earlier cars and are generally the versions most sought after by enthusiasts and collectors.
Only around 9, 000 of these later V8 versions were produced, making them considerably rarer than the earlier SSRs.
6. 0-litre Chevrolet SSR uses the GM LS2 V8.
The LS2 is a 6. 0L Gen IV small-block V8, 364 cu in, aluminium block and heads. In the SSR it was rated at about 390 hp with the automatic, depending on model year/ spec.
The LS2 was also fitted to several other GM performance cars, notably:
- 2005–2007 Chevrolet Corvette C6
- 2005–2006 Pontiac GTO
- 2006–2007 Cadillac CTS-V
- 2006–2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS
- 2005–2006 Chevrolet SSR
The 4L65-E automatic in the 6. 0 SSR was also used in several other GM vehicles, especially higher-torque versions of the 4L60-E family.
Common applications included:
- Chevrolet SSR
- Chevrolet Corvette C5 automatic applications used related 4L60-E/ 4L65-E variants
- Pontiac GTO
- Cadillac Escalade
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- GMC Sierra 1500
- Chevrolet Tahoe
- GMC Yukon
- Chevrolet Suburban
- Hummer H2
The important bit is that 4L65-E is basically the strengthened version of the 4L60-E, designed for more torque.
What Makes the SSR Unique
The SSR combines several completely different types of vehicle in one.
It has the styling of a classic American hot rod, the rear load area of a pickup, the performance and soundtrack of a large-capacity V8, and a power-operated retractable hardtop that transforms it from a closed coupé into an open-top roadster at the touch of a button.
There really isn't another production vehicle quite like it.
Interior & Comfort
Despite its retro hot-rod appearance, the SSR offers a comfortable and well-equipped interior, including:
• Spacious two-seat cabin
• Heated leather seats
• Power-adjustable seats
• Driver's seat memory
• Air conditioning
• Cruise control
• Power windows and door locks
• Power-operated retractable hardtop
• Leather-wrapped steering wheel
• Premium Bose audio system
• Auto-dimming rear-view mirror
• Driver information centre
• Electrically adjustable exterior mirrors
• Lockable covered rear load area
The Chevrolet SSR is a genuinely unusual piece of American automotive history: rare, powerful, instantly recognisable and unlike almost anything else on the road.
And of the SSR range, the later 2005–2006 V8 version is the one to have.
