This 1962 Mk I MG Midget began life as a 948cc car. Today, following more than 2, 000 hours of restoration, engineering and development, it stands as the most highly specified MG Midget we have ever witnessed.
The car arrived with us in 2020 for a year-long transformation through our Bespoke programme. Its owner's ambition was simple: to create the ultimate expression of the MG Midget, incorporating virtually every upgrade Frontline had developed since 1991.
At its heart is a 1275cc A-Series, enlarged to 1, 360cc, highly tuned and fitted with an Eaton supercharger. Now producing 155bhp, it is supported by an enlarged alloy radiator, Revotec electric cooling fan and fully programmable ignition with rev limiter. More than 4, 000 miles have been covered since completion, demonstrating the cars usability and reliability.
A billet lightweight flywheel mates to Frontline's five-speed gearbox conversion, sending power through the original-type banjo axle, now equipped with a limited-slip differential and strengthened fine-spline half shafts.
A bespoke twin exit stainless steel exhaust sytem has been fabricated to give a distinctive and symetrical appearance at the rear of the car, while up front the high-flow manifold is wrapped in kevlar to lower air intake temperatures and provide better performance.
Braking is transformed by Frontline four-pot billet front callipers, solid discs, braided lines and servo assistance, while rear disc brakes replace the original drums and an electronic handbrake adds further modernity.
The chassis features our rear traction-control link, adjustable telescopic rear dampers and our renowned front suspension kit, providing 1. 5 degrees of negative camber and modern adjustable damping. A restored steering rack and polyurethane front suspension bushes complete a package designed to provide precision and confidence.
The body received a complete restoration, with reinforcement where possible, comprehensive underbody protection and painstaking attention to panel gaps and alignment. A bespoke flush-fitting fuel filler was incorporated into the rear deck to preserve the clean lines of the exterior. Every piece of hardware throughout the car has been upgraded, replaced or restored.
Inside, extensive sound and heat insulation brings additional refinement. A bespoke body-coloured dashboard houses digital instrumentation and Jaguar-style stainless-steel toggle switches, complemented by a Momo Prototipo steering wheel. A heated windscreen is optioned for effective demisting and an immobiliser equipped for security. Heated seats with new foams are trimmed in premium red leather, a material continued throughout the cabin, doors and luggage compartment.
The inspiration for the project came from a scale model presented to us by the owner at the beginning of the build. That model is featured in the comprehensive documentation portfolio which shows some of the most considered design inspiration we have ever seen.
After five years and more than 4, 000 miles of enjoyment, its owner is embarking on a second Frontline project, presenting the opportunity for someone new to take custodianship of this extraordinary Midget.
