I bought the car from a private seller 9 years ago, and have always kept it in a heated dehumidified garage.
It still has an ‘original’ feel because there are very few modern modifications. For example, the engine still has the original oil filter holder, not a modern screw-in canister; the seats are original (probably re-covered); the dashboard and internal trim is the original colour and style. The only obvious change is the steering wheel, which is not original, but it’s beautiful ! There is one other change: the petrol filter and pump have been changed to Bosch, but they’re hidden behind the boot lining so they don’t affect the look of originality, plus they are much more reliable than the original.
There is a big pile of invoices and MOT’s going back to 1977. The mileage appears to be 143, 000 miles, but the records show a huge amount of work has been carried out over the years, mainly before 1992, after which the annual mileage dropped to a very low level, and in the last 20 years it’s only done a total of about 7, 000 miles. It drives really well and certainly doesn’t feel like it’s done high mileage…the gearbox is smooth, and there’s plenty of power.
Work carried out in the past includes, amongst many other minor items:
Re-spray
Cylinder head refurb including surface grind, new valve seat inserts, valve springs, rocker shaft.
New speedo cable
Rear springs and trailing arm brackets
New clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, injectors, fuel pump, radiator re-core,
New inner wings, bulkhead end, floor, inner sills, full sills, wings, inner wings
Engine re-build, big ends, main bearings, oil pump
Brake master cylinder
Replacement metering unit
More recently, the dashboard was removed and re-varnished, instruments refurbished, switches refurbished, heater removed re-built and refurbished.
The radio is a period radio that doesn’t work, but it looks much better than an empty hole!
The soft top has a rear window that zips down, so you can get great ventilation even with the top up.
The hard top, which bolts onto the car after removing the soft top, adds a whole new dimension to the TR6: it really changes the look of the car, and it changes the feel of the car when driving. I only used the hard top once because I only drive the car in the summer, usually with the top-down, so unfortunately I don't have any photos with the hard top in place.
