Here for sale is my beloved e28 520i affectionately referred to as “Maggie”.
The car is a September 1987 build which was then registered in April 1988. The car was supplied by Altwood BMW in Slough. I have the original owners book, with the service books and business cards of all the managers who were working there in period. The dealership is now defunct sadly. The car most likely spent most of its time in England. However, I know the car was for sale in Scotland shortly before I managed to pick it up. I purchased the car in September 2020 in Lisburn, NI.
The car still utilises its original M20B20 and in my ownership I’ve fitted a new timing belt and water pump along with regular servicing using either Hengst or Mahle filtration and Liqui Moly lubricants. The car was never used for extended periods of time in winter. It’s been a fair weather car all its life. Which when you see the overall condition of the vehicle becomes apparent especially the underside.
The car spent most of late 2024, early 2025 being sympathetically “restored” at my buddy, Brian Dunnes shop Oldtimer Automotive. In its time there, Brian tackled all of the jobs which were required to get the car back motoring. Namely, there were some small localised areas of rust which were correctly repaired and repainted to match the rest of the paintwork. My two mismatched Recaro “LS” fishnets were fitted, along with a chassis-mounted short shift kit with an extended gear lever. The engine was serviced including the aforementioned timing belt and water pump replacement. Generally the car was just given a thorough inspection and any issues which cropped up were corrected.
The car was then NCT’d where it failed on alignment and headlight alignment. Not bad for an old car! Both issues were duly sorted and the car obtained its second last ever NCT. Once complete, we then dialled in the desired stance. Lowering the car back down on its MTS Technik coilovers and fitting spacers all around to make the most of my 14x7 BBS Mahle wheels. The car has an aggressive stance due to the ride height and the replica Alpina style front spoiler which was fitted during the recomission.
Overall, this vehicle has been very well kept all of its life and in my six year ownership I’ve always made sure any job that was required, was completed in due course. It’s an extremely usable retro BMW. Even at the silly ride height I have it at! The M20 sings due to the exhaust system fitted by a previous owner. It’s pretty much a sit in and drive vehicle.
I will be immensely sad to see this car go and it isn’t something I ever really wanted to do. The car holds a lot of sentimental value to me. However, I also have a classic Mini and I want to get that car back motoring too. Unfortunately as the old adage goes, “you can’t keep them all”.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me regarding the car, I’ll be happy to talk you through it all. I appreciate there is a lot of information written here.
Car is tax’d well into next year and the car will come freshly NCT’d (final NCT ever) for the new owner.
Looking for €11, 995 for the car. Car can be viewed in my unit in Roundwood, Co. Wicklow.
Thanks for reading,
Nathan
