Description
Priced for a prompt sale is my 1974 MGB GT. She presents very well with her respray in teal blue contrasting excellently with the original interior in caramel velour. The car was also registered in the last month they made the chrome bumper models before switching to the black rubber versions.
During my ownership it has had a new clutch and a rebuilt gearbox (undertaken by Hardy Engineering). Furthermore, it has had the head gasket replaced, new oil cooler and woven chrome pipework fitted and underseal. Carburetors have been cleaned and adjusted as a part of a full service with new oil and petrol filters and fluids replacement.
On the downside, the car occasionally emits white smoke from the exhaust. Having taken advice from various specialists it could be caused by a number of reasons.
1. Worst case scenario split to block or head. Unlikely, as oil and coolant levels stay static.
2. Blown head gasket. Unlikely, new one fitted August 2026.
3. Uneven surface to head.... checked and flat when new gasket fitted.
4. Worn brake fluid seal in brake master cylinder.
5. Worn inlet manifold gaskets.
Cosmetically, there is some cracking to internal headlining trim and loose trim panels in the boot however due to the age and originality this is to be expected. The heating knobs need replacing (available online at minimum cost) and the cable needs reconnecting to the new heating control valve. I may be able to undertake this before sale.
My imminent relocation and unforseen financial commitments mean I reluctantly have to sell. With its very good structural condition, recent respray, wonderful original period interior and quite extensive mechanical works (paperwork available), this would be comfortably worth around 10k.
For a quick sale, I am looking for £7500 ONO.
All in all, a wonderful period motor complete with the looks, patina, sounds and smells you would expect with an iconic British sports car.
